Great "old school" outing today by rookie Jack Flaherty who picked up his first ML win.   7 2/3, 2 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 13 K; he threw 120 pitches.  Then the flamethrowing rookie Jordan Hicks came in and hit 105mph on the radar gun.  105!

Cards won 5-1.  Oh, another rookie, OF Tyler O'neill hit his 2nd homer in two days. Through 29 games in AAA he'd hit 13 HR and had 26 RBI.   He's the son of a professional body builder and the apple doesn't fall far from the tree.  During one of his at bats today he swung and knocked the helmet off his head with his traps muscles.  They flexed, hit the ear flap and off went the helmet.

That is impressive, on both counts. First, I don't remember the last time I heard of the pitcher throwing 120 pitches. It just doesn't happen these days. Second, 105 mph is BLISTERING!

Just got this tidbit from MLB Network.

Milwaukee reliever Josh Hader has had a 2 strike count on 79 batters this season and only 1 batter has gotten a hit.  That's a league average of .013

That's pretty crazy. I think the league average for 2 strike counts is something in the .100s.

I was away at the lake all weekend, so I missed (thankfully!) The Jays getting swept by Oakland at home. After being 7 games above .500 at one point, they are now 3 games under. They don't look anywhere near competitive, and sometimes don't even look competent.

I'm much more interested in checking out the Jays' minor league teams lately. After going 5 for 7 with a walk and a walkoff home run in a doubleheader, Guerrero is hitting .421 with 8 home runs, 45 RBIs, and an OPS of 1.169 in his first 39 games in AA. At 19, he's easily the youngest player in the league.

I really don't see why they keep them in AA. Challenge him more at AAA and allow him to work on aspects of his game there. I'm not saying column up to the majors, because the Jays are terrible lately and there's no use in burning a year of service, but what is the point of keeping him in AA?

Mikolas continued his great pitching last night throwing a complete game 4-hit shutout against the Royals. He's now 6-0 with an ERA just over 2. Tyler O'neill homered for the third day in a row. He also doubled. He's played in 4 games and has 3 HR and 6 RBI.

Could Mikolas be considered for a rookie of the year if he continues to pitch this well?

Nope. He used to pitch for Milwaukee

Hey, I see the Braves cut Bautista loose. What's up with that?

He was hitting below the Mendoza line after 40 at-bats.

That's still a pretty small sample size. Matt Carpenter was hitting .148 until he got hot and is batting over .500 for the last week or so.

I'm surprised Atlanta gave up on him so easily.

I just read that was Mikolas' first career shutout.

And I was wrong; I don't know where I got that he pitched for Milwaukee. He spent 2 years with the Padres in 2012 and 2013 compiling a grand total of 34 innings pitched. Then he pitched 57.1 with Texas in 2014 before leaving for Japan where he spent the last 3 years.

You can't tell me he didn't learn something over there. His numbers in MLB before Japan weren't horrible but they certainly weren't anything near what he's doing this season. He's already thrown 60.1 innings for STL and his ERA is over 4 runs less than it was in Texas when he threw a comparable number of innings and a run and a half less than it was for his Padres career.

Luke Weaver starts tonight for STL and the word is he's pitching for his starting spot in the rotation because Alex Reyes is making his final rehab start in Memphis this week and so far Reyes has been lights out. Weaver has been up and down so far this season but he's pitched much better in his last couple starts.

Weaver pitched well enough (7 innings, 3 runs) but the Cardinals bats were mothballed again so KC won 5-1.

Some people just figure things out over there. I can think of a few people who have gone over there having mediocre to fair results, and then coming back and doing much better. Maybe it's just something to do with a different approach.

KC is the only team the Jays have swept this year.

After breaking a four-game losing streak on Tuesday, the Jays decided to start a new one yesterday. They are falling a victim to two things, the starters failing to go more than 5 or 6 innings in any game, and having Osuna on administrative leave.

The bullpen has been great so far, but when they have to pitch anywhere from 3 to 5 innings a game, they get worn down. They have some options for closing games, as a few of the guys have closed before, but they are certainly not up to Osuna's level. Depending what happens with Osuna, they may just have to deal with this for several more weeks, a few months, or even the rest of the season. They may even determine that what Osuna did (there still hasn't been much public information) was something too severe and decide to get rid of him. From a strictly performance point of view, that's a hard pill to swallow. Of course, you can't decide based on that.

The Jays have one of those stupid Facebook only games on this afternoon.

In typical fashion, the Jays are down 4-0 in the 5th and the bullpen is already in. Estrada lasted 4 1/3.

At least Guerrero is 2 for 4 with a homer for New Hampshire.

On the Jays' broadcast, they just replayed that segment with Donaldson and DeRosa where Donaldson says "When your coach tells you to get on top of the ball, tell him 'no'."

Jays are down 8-1. Unless things turn around in the next month and a half, I don't expect Donaldson to be a Jay after the trade deadline.

That segment is classic.  They replayed that last off-season constantly.

Cards are off today. A-FREAKIN'-GAIN!!!!!

I swear, you watch when July and August come around; I bet we'll play 60 games with maybe 2or 3 days off mixed in.

They really do have a lot of games off lately.

It seems the Jays could use the rest of the month off. It seems like they've taken most of the month off anyway. With the 8-1 loss yesterday, they've now lost 7 series in a row. They are now 4 games under .500 after having been 7 above. They finished the homestand with a 1-6 record. How brutal is that? They are now off to Philadelphia. Garcia will be coming off the DL and will pitch one of the games.

MLB Central's weekly Friday trivia question:

Justin Verlander arrived in the big leagues in 2006 and is one of 3 active starting pitchers to have struck out at least 100 batters every year since. Who are the other two?

I think I know one of them. Felix Hernandez.

It's hard to think of one who's been around that long who's a strikeout guy and has been pretty healthy throughout his career. Hernandez might be one of them, but I remember he spent a fair bit of time on the DL one season. A few possibilities: CC Sabathia, Bartolo Colón, and Cole Hammels.

Bingo with Hamels! The other one is James Shields.

One of the guys guessed Hernandez but he fell short last year.

Yeah, that was the year he was on the DL. Otherwise I'm sure he would have as well.

Cecil the Seasick Sea Serpent is Sucking again as usual.

After John Gant allowed 1 run on 4 hits thru 5 2/3 innings, Matheny elected to bring in CtSSS with runners on first and third.  So far CtSSS has allowed both runners to score (which of course doesn't affect his ERA - man I hate that).

He just managed to get the third out on a line out.  Geez he sucks...AGAIN.  Like I said of Holland, I can be just as crappy for 1% of his paycheck.
