The Jays play their last home game of the season today. They are also supposedly announcing that Gibbons will not return next season. I'll miss him. He's got to be one of the most personable managers I've ever seen.

This is my favorite Gibby ejection.

Gibby gets his own day in Toronto.

And this sums up Gibby

He is pretty funny.

I like that quote from his argument with Will Little "Were you out all F'n night??"

MLB Network has the Astros/Jays game on. I just saw Grichuk homer

Grichuk has the third most extra-base hits in the American League since the All-Star break.

Something nice today, Jon Berti, who has played 748 minor-league games is making his MLB debut at second today. When Gibbons came to take out the starter and the infielders were around the mound waiting for the reliever, he looked up at the Jumbotron (the huge scoreboard that shows replays) and saw Berti and him on the screen, so he pulls Berti over, turns him around and puts his arm around him to pose.

Grichuk seems to be a "second-half" player. The last two years he was in STL he caught fire after he'd been sent to AAA. But both times he was brought back up in the second half. This year he's again caught fire in the second half but wasn't sent down this time so maybe he's just one of those guys who seems to find his groove later in the year.

He didn't go to AAA this season, but he was on the DL. When he came back, his stance was noticeably different.

Gibby got quite the sendoff. The first question at the announcement was something along the lines of "You were handed an awful team this season and will finish well below .500, yet you are more popular than ever. How do you explain that?" It is highly unusual for a manager to be so popular with fans when their team is losing, yet I actually saw a few people in tears in the stands! An reading several stories and comments today, this seems to rank up there with watching Bautista, Edwin, or Donaldson go. I sure hope he gets to manage somewhere else again.

It was obvious that Gibbons didn't "lose the players" as happens with many managers at their end. Every single player and coach waited in the dugout after the game while Gibby was being interviewed so that he could lead the way to the locker room.

A couple more of my favorites:

Gibby gets thrown out, makes a pitching change anyway.

The Cardinals pretty much folded their tents these last three games against Milwaukee. Last night was really bad. The Brewers tried like hell to let us tie it up in the 8th but on a throwing error into rightfield the pinch runner fell down halfway between 3rd and home and was thrown out.

It's all over but the crying now.

They are only one game out of the second wildcard.

Yeah but we're in Chicago to play the Maddons for the final 3 games while LA is at San Fran.

More on Joe West Laughing :

https://www.yahoo.com/sports/bob-brenly-piles-recent-joe-west-bashing-blasts-umpires-priorities-140629030.html

Quote :
"It's amazing he can see a camera leaning an inch over the railing but he misses strikes by 6 feet." -- Bob Brenly on umpire Joe West.

There's also this:

Quote :
Back when he was working Chicago Cubs games a handful of years ago, he took aim at C.B. Bucknor, telling his listeners, “If a hitter had as much problems at the plate as C.B. does behind it, he’d either be in the minor leagues or carrying a lunch bucket somewhere, but every year there he is.”

I think I have a new favorite commentator!

CB Bucknor is another umpire who is brutal. Can you imagine having him, Joel West, and Angel Hernandez doing the same game?

Throw in Laz Diaz and you have the Four Horsemen of the umpire apocalypse.

Cards lost to the Cubs today 8-4. Wainwright gave up 4 runs but it was still a game until the defense started throwing the ball around and every reliever sucked. They deserved to lose and deserve to not be in the playoffs. They picked a really bad time to start playing like s**t.

Hopefully next year will be better with a healthy Alex Reyes in the rotation, a healthy Ozuna for the whole season and no Greg Holland or Bret Cecil screwing up games out of the bullpen.

I guess we both get to cheer for other teams this postseason. And, starting the end of March, our teams will both be tied for first.

It will be a real off-season of transition for the Jays. Besides having to find a new manager (still don't know why they got rid of Gibbons if everyone loved him), and likely several new coaching staff, they also have to figure out what to do about Tulowitzki, who is still owed 20 million for 2019 and 14 million for 2020. What you do with a guy like that who is always injured and isn't as good as the young guys coming up? Martin is also load 20 million for 2019. The Jays have four catchers on the 40 man roster. I can see Martin mainly being the backup catcher next year and playing some infield occasionally, or at the very most half-time catcher, mentoring Danny Janzen, and possibly Reese McGuire as well. Or maybe they eat a whole bunch of the contract, and trade him to the team that needs a catcher.

Other questions are when will Guerrero and the other top prospects, Bo Bichette and Cavan Biggio arrive? Will they play the "service time game" with Guerrero and then deny they are actually doing it, like most teams do? With Bichette and Biggio main positions being shortstop and second base, what do they do with the other glut of infielders, Tulowitzki, Diaz, Solarte, Travis, and the Jays best rookie this season, Gurriel Jr.? Will they trade Pillar while he has value and move Grichuk to center? Will they re-sign any of their free agents? So many questions.

If I remember over the off-season, I have to come and answer these questions as they come up.

The big "acquisitions" for the Cardinals in the off-season will be getting guys healthy. A healthy Alex Reyes and a healthy Marcel Ozuna. I still don't understand why Ozuna waited until 2/3 of the season was over to get a cortisone shot in his shoulder but once he did, boy did it make a difference.

The only real thing the Cardinals need to do in the off-season is find a closer and frankly I'd be fine with keep Carlos Martinez in that role if he's willing to do it. The word is he actually liked closing games; he liked the spotlight and the pressure. With a healthy Reyes taking Wainwright's spot in the starting rotation we're set there so all we need is a closer.

Yeah, that's always a big boost to get guys healthy. I guess the same thing could be said about the Jays.

Good to see the Cubs lose game 163 and the Brewers take the division title. Now we just need to see the Cubs lose the wild-card game.

Yep!  That's my plan too.

I think the Brewers are my team for the post-season.  Have you seen Christian Yelich's second half numbers?  They're off the chart!  He's the NL MVP for sure.  I also find Jesus Aguilar's dugout schtick after he hits a homer to be hilarious.  I actually like their whole team except for Ryan "Cheater" Braun but of the teams that are in the post-season I think they're my pick.  Followed by Houston and maybe the Dodgers in memory of my Dad (although I really don't like that team; "Yankees West")

And down go the Cubs!
🤣

Yelich's season was awesome. I think he was the prize of the Marlins' sell off. He's the most dynamic of the players. There are a couple ex-Jays on the team too.

For the AL, I like the Indians because they have Lindor, who's an amazing shortstop and looks like he has fun playing the game. There are also 4 or 5 former Jays.

I guess I'll have to cheer for the Yankees against the Red Sox. Talk about a conundrum.

Yeah that was on MLB Central this morning.

Sounds like a class act Cubs fan (another conundrum!).  I like that he not only honored his boast but also used his newfound platform to promote Rizzo's charity.

MLB Central also had a feature on the Brewers that cemented them as my team to pull for. Those guys actually LIKE each other; they do all kinds of "team events" and unlike most teams where it's the pitchers getting together or the infielders or relievers or whatever, it's EVERYBODY including coaches and clubhouse guys, etc. They interviewed a bunch of players who all talked about how they'd been on teams with prima donnas or where some guys were unlikeable but they all say they genuinely like each other.

That's how it should be, but that's hardly ever how it is. I guess it's hard to collect that many people together for that long and have them get along really well. It does say something about the quality of the coaching staff and players.

Wow. Typical Yankee fan. I was never so scared at a sporting event as I was when I went to "old" Yankee Stadium with my girlfriend back around 1994 to see a Yankees/Red Sox game. Naturally we had crappy upper deck seats and there were fights CONSTANTLY. And one demented idiot in a Yankees jersey kept lighting his hair on fire! I spent most of the game just looking around for anybody I needed to protect my girlfriend from; it totally sucked.

THIS is what makes the post-season interesting. The Brewers' "bullpenning" strategy seemed to be working to a "T" but in the 9th the closer Jeffress has coughed up 2 runs so the game is tied 2-2 now. Another good, competitive post-season game.
