That's a nice outing by "Jay Don't Call me J.A." Happ

I'm not sure why they played the last inning. The game was so far out of reach, it was pouring, and there were puddles everywhere. The Jays ended up winning 12-1. One of the most surprising things is that there wasn't an error in this game, despite the conditions.

They hung on for a 7-5 win.  Bud Norris got another 2 inning save.  That's about the third time he's done that.

Oh, and there was a lot of grousing by both sides about the strike zone.  Guess who was behind the plate?

He's just terrible.  He sucks as a base umpire too.

The Jays are 18-0 when they score 5 or more runs.

I think a lot of teams are way up in the win column when they score 5 or more runs.

BTW, Mikolas started today and wasn't as dominating as he's been most of the season.  He only gave up two runs but didn't even go 5 innings.  For one thing he'd thrown a lot of pitches but he also was hit by a line drive in the third inning.  That reminds me, I need to see who they gave the win to.

Cool, they gave it to Jordan Hicks.  He's the 21 year old flamethrower; the one who threw a 102mph fastball that was fouled off into Molina's nads.

Speaking of which, after Molina's injury that not only landed him on the DL for a month but also required surgery, the Cards placed an order with a company that produces a cup called "Nutshellz".  Not only is is supposedly more "anatomically accurate" but it's supposed to withstand a bullet.  There's a video by the manufacturer proving it.  They actually fire a bullet into a guy's crotch.

http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/baseball/cardinals-buy-bulletproof-cups-yadier-molina-injury-article-1.3982704

My question is, why doesn't every team use these?

Who signed up to test the bullet to the crotch? I sure wouldn't be.

It was actually the owner of the company.  Talk about standing behind your product

Here we go again.  Cardinals are trailing the Phillies 1-0 in the 7th and we had runners on 2nd and 3rd with only one out and catcher Fernando Pena (Tony Pena's son who is only playing because Molina is on the DL) grounded out.

I swear, the Cardinals have had two main problems since I've been following them for about 50 years:

1) terrible against junkballing lefties - especially if they've never seen the pitcher before
2) inability to score runners from third base with less than 2 outs.

It's been like that for decades.

And of course in the top of the 8th, the Phillies get a base hit on a 50 hopper ground ball up the middle, a blooper that should have been caught followed by a broken bat single.  It's now Phillies 3, Cardinals 0.

What makes this inning hurt more is the fact that the Cardinals blew a chance to score in the bottom of the 7th.

And now the Phillies get a solid single so its now 4-0.  Guess I'll be going to bed soon...

Well, they did manage to score a couple runs. And then the Phillies did as well. Hopefully you went to bed.

Just because I mentioned the other day, the Jays lost 10-5 yesterday, their first loss of the season when scoring 5 or more runs. Starting pitching was lousy, bullpen wasn't great, and they couldn't score when they needed to.

And for the Jays, it's Jaime Garcia with "shoulder inflammation".

The Cardinals are becoming the walking wounded.  They moved Wainwright to the 60 day DL so he's just about done.

And just as I finished typing that I see a crawl on MLBN saying they've put Paul DeJong on the 10 day DL.  Good grief.

Dammit!  I looked it up on the Cardinals site.  Fractured left hand after being hit by a pitch in the 8th inning last night.  He's going to miss a lot more than 10 games.

I didn't know this:

Quote :
Since making his debut on May 28, 2017, DeJong is ranked 3rd among all Major League middle infielders (SS/2B) in home runs with 33, trailing only the Twins' Brian Dozier and the Indians' Francisco Lindor who both have 34.

He has one less homer over that time period than Lindor???? I never would have guessed that.

That 6 year contract extension the Cardinals gave DeJong before the season and I was complaining about is making more and more sense.

But it still kills me that we have two starting pitchers, our starting catcher and our starting shortstop on the DL at the same time.

Well Greg Holland struck again yesterday.  After fighting back from deficits of 3-0 then 5-3 the Cards took a 6-5 lead into the 8th.  Enter "The 13 Million Dollar Disaster".  Holland got the first two outs then walked a batter, gave up a double then a single and boom, 7-6 Phillies and that's how it ended. Holland is now 0-2 with a 7.30 ERA and a 2.27 WHIP.  I'll make the Cardinals a deal; sign me to replace Holland.  I can come in and screw up games for 1/10th of what he's making.

Great "old school" outing today by rookie Jack Flaherty who picked up his first ML win.   7 2/3, 2 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 13 K; he threw 120 pitches.  Then the flamethrowing rookie Jordan Hicks came in and hit 105mph on the radar gun.  105!

Cards won 5-1.  Oh, another rookie, OF Tyler O'neill hit his 2nd homer in two days. Through 29 games in AAA he'd hit 13 HR and had 26 RBI.   He's the son of a professional body builder and the apple doesn't fall far from the tree. During one of his at bats today he swung and knocked the helmet off his head with his traps muscles. They flexed, hit the ear flap and off went the helmet.

Watching the Cardinal post-game show and they're saying that 105 ties the fastest pitch ever thrown in MLB which was by Aroldis Chapman. Hicks threw 3 pitches at 104 and two at 105. Hicks is saying in the post game press conference that seeing his Memphis teammate Flaherty get a standing O as he left the game pumped him up.

Just got this tidbit from MLB Network.

Milwaukee reliever Josh Hader has had a 2 strike count on 79 batters this season and only 1 batter has gotten a hit. That's a league average of .013

Oh, and it's not baseball but it was just announced today that for the next 15 years the arena where the Blues play hockey will be called "Enterprise Center". You know your company is doing well when it buys the naming rights to a pro sports teams home.

Mikolas pitching tonight vs Royals.

Allowed two flukey hits but struck out the side in the first.

Tyler Oneill just hit his third homer in three days, this one a three run shot, to put STL up 4-0 over KC in the third. Good luck sending this guy back down. Now what do we do? Tonight they're resting Fowler who isn't hitting even the Mendoza line. Matheny has to keep playing Oneill as long as he's hitting like this.

At least your closer is eligible to play. Osuna is still on administrative leave. Depending what happens with that, he may not ever pitch for the Jays again. He may just need to start fresh somewhere else to put this behind him.
