The Jays coughed up another dud last night, losing 12-5. Terrible pitching from the starter and the BP.

I'm off to the lake for 5 days. Hope they win at least a couple games.

Sea Serpent had another "stellar" outing tonight.

With the Cardinals up 7-2 in the top of the 8th, for some unknown reason Mike Shildt decided to have Brett Cecil start the inning.  Why, I have no idea.  He should know you can't bring in Sea Serpent unless you're hopelessly behind or ahead by at least 7 runs, not a mere 5.  Sure enough, Cecil got all of one out and gave up 3 runs; good grief does he suck.  Just cut his lame ass loose already; the Nats seem to be collecting crappy pitchers so maybe he could rejoin Greg Holland in their dumpster fire of a bullpen.

EDIT: Fortunately the Reds' bullpen is worse and the Cardinals have already gotten those 3 runs back in the bottom of the 8th and are still batting.

We have a trailer permanently parked there. There is a deck, shed, and gazebo attached to the trailer. We keep our boat there, so it really is nice to get out and relax.

Well, this weekend spelled the end of the Donaldson era in Toronto. It's sad to see him go because of the type of player he is and the impact he had on the team, but it was necessary, unfortunately. He hasn't played since May some time, and never really was healthy this year, but the few years before that were awesome. Granderson was also traded to the Brewers, for a minor league outfielder.

Overall, things are giant dumpster fire in Blue Jay land. Stroman came back from the DL and lasted less than 2 innings before his blister resurfaced. He's now been shut down for the season. The Jays have used a team record number of pitchers this year, and not too few position players as well.

Trying to get back into baseball amid all the personal upheaval. I didn't even follow what the Cardinals did while I was in Florida but apparently they basically tread water. And then they dropped 3 of 4 to LA.

But Miles Mikolas picked up his 16th win last night even though he struggled (5 IP, 2 ER). He's 16-4 with an ERA right at 3.00. Not a bad signing at 2 years/$15 mil.

I imagine it's been a busy time. I hope you can get settled and start to enjoy baseball again, even with all that's happened/happening.

Memphis won the PCL league championship and the AAA championship. That's amazing considering almost 70 guys went through there this year and only 9 guys from the opening roster finished there. The whole starting rotation from the beginning of the season is now up with St Louis.

Wow. That's a lot. The Jays, with all their injuries, really hammered the Buffalo (AAA) roster. Buffalo didn't fare nearly as well though and finished with the worst record in the International League.

The Jays' AA Eastern League affiliate won the title by sweeping both the Yankee's and Indians' affiliates.

There are a couple things I wanted to show you while you were away.

Hope you can see the video at this link. Is this not the nastiest swing?
https://twitter.com/BasebaIlKing/status/1039668604835254272

This one is a good story. Rowdy Tellez, a September call up from AAA, hit a double in the first pitch of his first at-bat. Then he went on to hit doubles in his next two at-bats. His first six hits were doubles. In his first four games, he had seven extra-base hits.

What makes this more special is that he lost his mom to brain cancer less than three weeks before.

Well one out of three ain't bad I guess. First vid wouldn't play and the second one was about DJ Stewart. I did read the article about Rowdy Tellez in the third link. That had to be a hard first MLB AB because as he said, most guys expect to have both their parents in the stands for that momentous event and he didn't have either one.

Maybe this one will work for the first video.

Here's the correct second video.

Yeah, those links worked.

Thoughts:

Bischette needs to reign in that swing because anyone in MLB with a decent change of pace pitch will just carve him up.

Nice moment for Tellez in that second vid.

The Jays tied their record for 9th-inning comebacks last night, scoring 7 runs on 3 home runs, beating Tampa 9-8.

In a Cards related note, Grichuk and Diaz have been doing pretty well overall. Grichuk started really slowly this season, but has been hitting almost .300 since the All-Star break. He's been very good defensively. Diaz has been fairly consistent, but has picked it up as of late. His defense has been good, especially at 3rd, where they have been playing him lately.

The Nationals need to do something about their field. I've never seen one tear up this easily.

MLB Central was talking about all the former Cardinals doing well for other teams: Diaz, Grichuk, Piscotty, Oh, Pham and on and on.  And yet the players who replaced those guys in STL are also doing well.  It sure is nice to have a good farm system.

The show particularly highlighted the Piscotty for Munoz trade. That one has really worked out well for both teams but it seemed like a very minor deal when it was made. Piscotty now has 26 HRs for Oakland and Munoz has played practically everywhere on the field and provided some decent pop.

That's probably the reason people call the Cardinals the model franchise. Whatever it is they do right, scouting, drafting, development, etc., is what tweaks had to do before free agency became so big. Teams had to develop their farm systems and feed off them. That seems to be lost on many teams now.

Grichuk hit a 465 foot homerun last night to tie his best for homeruns in a season. On the broadcast they talked about when he was on the DL, he/they made some changes to his stance so that it is more upright. That has been the turnaround for him.

The Jays lost 11-3. The only interesting thing was that Lourdes Gurriel hit 2 home runs. His brother Yuli (Astros) also hit 2. It was the first time brothers have hit 2 homeruns on the same night.

I find it odd that closers often can't pitch well in non-save situations. It's harder to understand than the reverse, where non-closers have trouble locking down the save. But check out these stats for Ken Giles, the closer the Jays got in the trade with Houston for Osuna.

7 non-save situations, 12.00 ERA
11 save situations, 0.84 ERA

THAT is an astounding difference. It was much the same in Houston this season, where he had an ERA of 11.37 in non-save situations.

Giles is also the only closer who hasn't blown a save this season. He is 23-23.

Miles Mikolas won his 17th game today as the Cardinals swept the Giants 9-2.

The coolest thing was the Cardinals TV announcer calling Matt Carpenter's 36th homer BEFORE it happened.  He barely got out the words "I'm predicting homerun 36" before Carp hit it.  Carpenter has been smoking the ball all day so it was obvious he was locked in.  And Mikolas AGAIN walked nobody in his 7 innings of work; he's now pitched 192 innings and has a grand total of 29 walks.  He's now 17-4 with an ERA under 3.  We signed him for 2 years and a total $15M.  That's looking more and more like the best off-season signing in MLB last year.

And that was the first time the Cardinals have swept the Giants in St. Louis since 1995.

Joe West strikes again!

Man that guy sucks as an umpire. He always makes the game about him.

Did you see this? Tyler Oneill hit a walkoff homer on Saturday and the team mobbed him and ripped his shirt off. His Dad is a bodybuilder in Canada and you can see the apple doesn't fall far from the tree.

The Cards must have obviously seen something in Mikolas that others didn't. Guys don't usually come walking in and pitch like that without other teams having an idea he could do it.

Not baseball but I found this sports-related story hilarious. Check out the Flyers new mascot; he looks like a muppet on meth.
