How does that even happen????

How does someone with that kind of talent end up having to play independent league pro ball to even get a look by MLB scouts?

Either he found something while pitching there or everyone's scouts whiffed.

AND (and this is the MOST mystifying) look where Scherzer is from.  F'n CHESTERFIELD, MISSOURI!!!!!!  That's where I lived the first 10 years after I moved here from CT.  How in the bloody heck did no Cardinal scout take a chance on him????????

EDIT: Holy crap!  His Wikipedia page even says he grew up a Cardinal fan.  Geez...imagine if we had that guy on the team!

No idea. He HAD to figure something out, or all the scouts absolutely missed on him.

The Jays win their 5th in a row, 8-6 over the Phillies. They were down 5-0 earlier in the game. Morales homered in his 6th straight game, and Diaz had a 3-run double in the 8th.

That guy is SO inconsistent. He can look like an ace one start then look like he has no idea what he's doing the next start. Plus he's extremely injury-prone which is why I think STL finally gave up on him. But he sure can look like a pitcher you can salvage.

The Cards beat the Rockies 7-5 last night for their 4 win in a row on this road trip.

Currently they're scoreless in the 7th.  Rookie John Gant has thrown 6 2/3 innings so far and only allowed one hit.  He's facing Matt Holliday now.

EDIT:  And Holliday just blasted a homer to give the Rox a 1-0 lead.  That figures.

EDIT2: And as soon as the Cards tied it up in the top of the 8th the bullpen is imploding in the bottom of the 8th. Dakota Hudson coughed up two runs and now Cecil is in to cough up 2 more. He's throwing a breaking ball that's just sitting in the middle of the plate. It's now 5-1 Rockies and the Cardinals are throwing in the towel because no one is throwing in the pen. Nice job Sea Serpent; way to add gasoline to the fire. So much for the "he's had 4 scoreless appearances in a row" crap. Can't we just DFA this clown already because it's pretty obvious HE SUCKS!!!!!!!

That's fine if Holliday hits one out as long as the Cards win, right?

Well, it was due to happen. It's been a great run for them this month though. Can't complain about a dud every couple weeks.

Geez Cecil gave up 3 runs and got no one out. His ERA was bad before but it just jumped up by more than a run.

Watching the Cardinals pound the Rockies 10-2 after 3.  They just ran an interesting stat:  28% of the STL innings pitched this year and 16% of the Cardinals runs are accounted for by rookies.

EDIT:  Well now it's 12-2 in the 7th.  Carpenter has 4 doubles and he's now tied for the NL lead in doubles as well as leading in HRs.  Final was 12-3; 9th straight series win for the Cardinals.  Rookie Austin Gomber not only got the win going 6 and allowing only 1 ER on 5 hits but he also drove in two runs with and infield single.  Yep!  Two runs on an infield single because CF Harrison Bader was on second at the time and just never stopped running.  That guy is lightning fast!

BTW, Dominic Leone came off the DL today to close it out. Poor guy missed over 90 games this year due to injury so we still don't really know what we got in him but he looked good today.

I'm watching the post-game show and they just said that AAA Memphis came from behind last night to win their division in the PCL. That's amazing to me given how much talent the major league club has raided from there this year. That seems to indicate that Cardinals scouts are still doing an excellent job drafting and signing young players.

What the Cardinals are doing with the number of rookies they have is pretty impressive. It would be interesting to see how that compares to other teams.

Is Carpenter at least getting some talk about MVP?

I hope Leone does well. I can't remember who we got from you in that deal, Diaz or Grichuk.

I think the Cardinal scouts have done a good job drafting and signing young players for a LONG time.

The Jays used to have their AAA affiliate in the PCL. One thing about the PCL is that you have to take the stats there with a grain of salt. It is such a hitters league that batters' stats are inflated and pictures' stats are poor because of that.

The Jays ended up dropping the third game of the series against the Phillies, 6-4. Estrada wasn't great again, giving up back-to-back home runs in the first inning. He didn't get much better from there. The bullpen was again great, as has been the case the last several games. The good part was that morale us hit a home run for the 7th game in a row, setting a Blue Jays record and a major league record for a switch hitter.

Also good news is that we start a series against the Orioles today. Cool

I saw Morales has been on an HR binge but I didn't realize it was up to 7 in a row

He's actually turned out to be one of the Jays' better hitters this year, which certainly wasn't the case at the beginning of the year.

In the middle of May, he was hitting .152/.248/.272 with 3 HR and people were screaming for the Jays to dump him. Shortly after that, he decided he could "see the ball too clearly" with his new glasses and decided to take them off. Now that doesn't seem to make sense, but you can't argue with the results. Since then, he is hitting .302/.375/.558 with 18 HR.

Cards are off today before hosting Pittsburgh. We have 19 home games left so they'll be playing in Busch a lot the rest of the way. Under Matheny I'd have said that was actually a drawback because the team had been hovering around .500 for the past year and a half at home under Matheny but like every other aspect of the team, that improved drastically since Mike Schildt took the reigns.

I just saw that the Phillies have claimed Bautista off waivers from the Mets and have until tomorrow to work out a deal.

Quote :
Bautista, 37, has played mostly the outfield corners this season. He's started 40 games in right field, 13 in left field and nine at third base.

In 338 plate appearances this season - 298 with the Mets, 40 before that with the Braves - Bautista has hit .199/.340/.368 with 14 doubles, 11 homers and 42 RBI.

Since July 1, his numbers are even worse. But this would simply be a "why not?" move.

Obviously he hasn't been doing much but with 11 homers in 338 ABs he might run into a couple so as the article notes "why not?"

It depends what the Mets would want back for him, but he could be a valuable performer down the stretch.

The Jays coughed up a dud in Baltimore last night, losing 7-0. Gaviglio was cruising along with a shutout until the 6th when he gave up runs. The Jays had a few chances, but looked lifeless.

Then there is this:

That one guy makes a good point; the O's are 52 games out so drawing 15K fans is actually pretty remarkable.

They will likely set a record for games behind. They said last night that no team has ever finished more than 52 games behind.

I see the Phillies did get Bautista for a player to be named later or cash.

MLB Network just broke a story that the Cardinals are taking the "interim" tag off of manager Mike Shildt. Good for him; he's earned it.

They're saying it's a 3 year contract. And how's this for "paying your dues":

Quote :
Shildt, 50, has been a member of the Cardinals organization since 2004 and had served on the team's Major League coaching staff the past two (2017-18) seasons. The North Carolina native managed for eight seasons in the Cardinals farm system where his clubs won league championships in 2010 and 2011 with Johnson City of the rookie Appalachian League and in 2012 with Springfield of the Texas League (AA). Prior to taking the Cardinals reins in July, Shildt had most recently managed in 2016 with Memphis of the Pacific Coast League (AAA).

During the Cards broadcast tonight they mentioned that Bautista is only the third player in MLB history to play for 3 teams in the same division in the same season. He's played for Atlanta, New York and now Philadelphia this year.

That DOES seem like a highly unusual feat. Most of the time teams won't trade potential impact players to other teams in the same division. I guess most of the NL East doesn't consider Bautista much of a threat at this point in his career.
