It does seem like a lot of prospects. I'm not sure if any of them are higher-level ones.

The Cardinals vs Maddons is the only game on the MLB schedule today

MLB Network was just comparing Mike Trout and Mickey Mantle. They were talking about how much more ground Mantle had to cover. It was 487 ft to center and 461 to right.

Can you imagine hitting a ball 480 feet and it NOT being a homer??? That's one enormous field.

I saw that. That's weird scheduling.

Wow, how did anyone hit home runs back then?

Not only that but 8 of the next 11 Cardinal games are against the Cubs.  Tonight is the start of a 5 game series.  We should find out real fast whether we're buyers or sellers this season.

If they don't take at least 5 out of the 8 games with Chicago I say blow up the club.  Entertain offers on all players except Paul DeJong, Jack Flaherty and Jordan Hicks.

Firing Matheny and Mabry was the first salvo.  If they don't make a race of it after these games then I say finish the job.  Stockpile prospects.  Build around DeJong as your power-hitting shortstop. Flaherty as your ace and Hicks as your closer.

2-0 STL in the top of the 2nd.  Kyle Hendricks has already thrown almost 50 pitches.

EDIT:  Well that went South in a hurry.  The Shlubs have scored 5 in the 5th and now lead 6-3.  The Cardinal defense has reared its ugly head again as they've already committed 2 errors.

EDIT2:  Holy crap, error number 3 in the 6th.  And after Carpenter homered in the top half to cut it to 6-4.  That's now 80 errors for the Cardinals, tops in the NL.

80 errors? Are the Cards trying to be like the Jays? I see they coughed it up last night after blowing the lead.

I know the Jays are bad this season, and I figured they were just bad in general, but that's actually not true. This surprised me.

Even though the Blue Jays repeatedly shot themselves in the foot last weekend and dropped three of four at Fenway Park, their level of engagement and determination was undeniable. Simply put, they’re decisively undermanned versus the Red Sox and Yankees, against whom they’re a combined 7-19 in contrast to 36-33 versus the rest of the baseball.

Yeah the Jays just happen to play in a brutally tough division.

Cards are up 5-0 over Lester and the Cubs in the second inning. Carpenter's already homered twice. He's now homered in 4 straight games.

Well even in a blowout win Cecil STILL SUCKS!!!   Holy freakin' crap!  He came in to pitch the 7th with a 16-1 lead.  He managed to get one out and left with a 16-4 lead.  Good grief he sucks; I say eat his contract and DFA him.  Surely somebody in the minors could use the experience of pitching out of the pen and sucking for a lot less money.

This has actually become a pretty entertaining game after the Cubs use Tommy La Stella as a pitcher for a couple innings and the Cardinals brought in the scrubs.  Then the Cubs brought in a backup catcher to pitch the 8th.  No scrub wants to make an out against a position player so everyone was swinging for the fences.  It's currently 18-5 in the bottom of the 9th after Ian Happ pitched a scoreless top of the inning.

When was the last time you heard of 3 different position players pitching in the same game????  I've never seen this before.

EDIT:  18-5 was the final.  What a bizarre game. Mostly precipitated by the fact that the teams play a split doubleheader tomorrow and a day game on Sunday.  And it's supposed to be raining a lot of the weekend in Chicago.

As predicted the Cardinals offense flew south for the first game of today's doubleheader with the Schlubs.  The Cards were actually in it before the bullpen imploded again in the 7th; the final score was 7-2 Maddons.

But Carpenter homered AGAIN!  That's 7 HR in his last 5 games and 5 games in a row with a homer.  Good grief, the guy was batting .146 on May 6; he's now hitting .275 with 24 HR and 52 RBI.  Talk about a turnaround...

Cards lost the first game today 7-2.  They were actually in it until the bullpen imploded in the 7th.  And Carpenter homered AGAIN/

It's currently 1-0 Cards in the bottom of the 6th.  John Gant threw 5 scoreless innings.  Now Greg Holland is in and he's already given up a walk and a hit.  Two on, one out.  The STL bullpen is just absolutely awful.

And now Holland threw a groundball and DeJong messed it up; could have been a DP but should have for sure been one out and we got nothing.

That right there encapsulates what's wrong with this team; crappy defense and even worse relief.

EDIT: And Holland walks in a run.  Bring in Cecil.  Let's F up this game for real.

Wow.  Carpenter didn't start the game but he pinch hit in the 7th and guess what he did?

Yep, homered.  That's now 6 games in a row with a homer and he's already hit 5 in the three games in Chicago.  I've never seen a player this hot before.  He's up to 25 homers for the season.

The Cardinals officially gave up in the 8th.  They were trailing 4-2 and guess who they brought in to start the 8th:

It's already 6-2 and there's only one out.

Final line on this this Cecil disaster:  1/3 IP, 4 H, 3 ER 1 BB 1 K.  You know what's really scary?  Cecil only threw 19 pitches.  It only took him 19 pitches to cough up 4 hits, a walk and 3 runs.

Breaking news: Cardinals are expected to announce the release of Greg Holland today.

Can we release Cecil next????

HAHAHAHAHA!  Cecil to the "10 day DL"

Quote :
Finally, the Cecil DL stint makes a lot of sense, as you’re still paying him for two more years, his 2017 performance was actually really solid once you get past the first month of the season, and, well, you’re paying him for two more years. Just letting him walk would still cost you the money and get you nothing in return. Therefore, Michael Girsch called Brett into his office the other day, told him what a great job he was doing, and then asked him to help move that sofa over against the other wall, at which point the sofa accidentally slipped out of Girsch’s hands and dropped right on Cecil’s foot.

Stroman pitched great last night, going 7 innings, giving up 2 hits and only 1 unearned run. He went out to pitch the 8th, but it is 2018 so he developed a blister and came out of the game after his warm-ups. In comes the bullpen, who proceed to absolutely CRAP all over the game. Tepera gives up 4 runs. The Jays managed to tie it in the 9th with a home run off Boston's closer, Craig Kimbrell. However, the bullpen would have no part of that and proceeded to give up another 5 runs in the 10th. The Jays ended up losing 9-7.

In other things related to 2018:
The roof of the stadium was leaking during a period of heavy rain and some of the lights went out for a while.

Trade deadline acquisition Brandon Drury (from the Yankees for J.A. Happ) coming to the Jays meant he could reconnect with his mentor Troy Tulowitzki. Yesterday, he decided to follow Tulo by getting injured and joining him on the DL.

Wow, what an amazing kid.

I've coached a boy on the high school team that has no arm below his left elbow. I've seen him play almost every position. It's impressive what he can do.
