And following the "mirroring philosophy" I don't like the Cards' chances against Cleveland tonight.  Rookie Flaherty is starting for STL and he's been outstanding.

Wow, I'm so old.  Both of the pitchers in tonight's game between Cleveland and STL were born the ame year I started my current job.

And in the 2nd inning the Indians are teeing off; back to back homers by Encarnacion and Chisenhall.  At least they were solo shots.

The Jays have the day off today before starting a series at home against Detroit.

The Cards are off today too after losing 5-1 last night to the Indians.  We open a series with Atlanta tomorrow.  So far the Cards are 5-5 during this stretch of playing first place (or at least "upper echelon")teams.

That's about what I expected.  I didn't think we'd tank but I also didn't think we'd dominate against teams like Milwaukee, Philadelphia and Cleveland.  And tomorrow we get Atlanta, another good, young team.

MLB Central showed the bobblehead being given away at the Mariners home game tomorrow. it's James Paxton with a detachable eagle on his shoulder.

Lost weekend. Cards were swept by the Braves.

Now we're off to AZ and SF which means I probably won't see much Cardinal action this week. I hate West Coast swings. Although with this year's brand of Cardinal baseball I'm probably better off not seeing it. The offense is soooooo inconsistent and the bullpen just plain sucks.

I'm watching Quick Pitch on MLBN and they shows Pillar's catch against Detroit. He literally looks like he's levitating.

I can sympathize, both with the inconsistent offense and bullpen. I cringe whenever somebody comes in to try to get a save.

I'll have to keep my eyes on this young kid. I remember the Jays signing a 16-year-old Brazilian last year, but didn't pay much attention to it.

That was pretty impressive catch. I didn't watch the game, but caught the highlights. I'm not sure which replay you saw, but even the hitter was applauding.

Yeah, the batter was applauding on the replay I saw too.

So far we've split with Arizona.

Carlos Martinez was more like his normal self in the first game allowing 2 runs in 6 innings. Last night rookie Jack Flaherty was mowing them down, retiring 10 in a row at one point, but with a 2-1 lead in the 4th he gave up a 3 run homer to Goldschmidt and the Dbacks won 4-2.

Mikolas goes tonight. Game doesn't start until after 9pm so I don't know how much I'll see. It's July 4th to the idiot rednecks will be shooting off fireworks all night so I'll probably end up staying up later than I normally would on a night before I have to get up for work.

Is that Martinez's first good start since coming back?

Yep. Hopefully he's back on track.

Mikolas won his 9th last night so the Cards took 2 of 3 from AZ in AZ. About time we won a series from a good team.

MLB Now was talking about Donaldson becoming a Cardinal again today.  Their proposed deal was AAA RHP starting pitcher Dakota Hudson being traded to Toronto for Donaldson.  Hudson is supposed to be next up to the big leagues when a starter is needed.  I'd probably be OK with that deal if Donaldson passes a physical.  We have a boatload of prospect starting pitchers and one of the reason we stockpile them is to use them as trade pieces.  They also seemed to think the change of scenery would be good for Donaldson.

Apparently the stupid hicks set a landmark deli on fire in South St. Louis county last night. According to the fire department these were "commercial grade" fireworks, not just bottle rockets or little crap. Not to mention that ALL fireworks are technically illegal in St. Louis.

I've come to hate the 4th of July holiday even more than I hate Christmas and I severely dislike Christmas.

Watching the Cardinals vs Giants - at least the early innings since it just started.

Johnny "kicks like a girl" Cueto started for the Giants for the first time since April and the Cardinals jumped on him for 4 in the first and another in the second. I still hate this a-hole from the brawl back in 2011 so I love watching the Cardinals knock his dreadlocked fat ass around.

I found video from that infamous incident:

Hard for me to believe this was that long ago; seems to me like it happened only a couple years ago.

And yeah, I still hate Cueto; he ended the career of catcher Jason LaRue in this brawl.

Today's MLB Central Friday trivia question:

Nolan Arenado is heading toward his 6th Gold Glove and 3rd HR title. Only three other players in MLB history have at least 6 Gold Gloves and 3 homerun titles. Who are they?

(I think it's more surprising who isn't on the list)

I saw that the Cardinals broke out the bats last night!

It's hard to believe he only got 7 games for that.

I really don't even know where to start on that one. I'm not sure I can even name players who have at least 6 Gold Gloves.

The answer is Willie Mays, Ken Griffey Jr and Mike Schmidt.

What I found surprising is no Mantle, no DiMaggio

Today while I was working I watched the Reds hang on and beat the Chicago Maddons 3-2,

It was the Cubs feed on MLBN so I loved hearing their announcers squirm as they got beat by the "lowly" Reds. I bet those same announcers were laughing their butts off when the Reds swept STL early in the season.

Make no mistake, if the Reds can find some starting pitching somewhere they could be formidable because their offense can really put up runs. Obviously it won't happen this year but give it a year or two and watch out. The whole NL Central is mostly on the upswing except for Pittsburgh and even they remain competitive.

The Cards lost 3-2 to the Giants last night when the bullpen blew it

Today they won 3-2 when Carlos Martinez pitched well again and this time the bullpen held it.

So far on this road trip to AZ and SF we're 4-2 which is better than I expected. Tomorrow it's rookie Jack Flaherty against MadBum in SF so I fully expect to finish the trip 4-3 which is still about the best I figured I could hope for.

So much for Greg Holland figuring anything out.

With the Cards trailing 6-4 in the 5th, Matheny decided to bring in Holland.  Holland's line for the game:  2/3 IP, 4H, 2 BB, 5 ER.  His ERA had finally dropped below 6. So much for that; it's over 8 after today's outing.

Yep, Holland officially sucks again.
