BTW, today's starter for St. Louis is Anthony Reyes. it's his first start since 2016 when he had TJ surgery. He pitched 27 rehab innings this year and fanned 44 and allowed no earned runs. In his last start at Memphis he struck out 9 guys in a row at one point. Apparently he's also dropped 15 pounds which the pitching coach says is allowing Reyes better control of his offspeed stuff.

So now I'm doubly pissed that I don't get to see the game.

Ken Rosenthal is on MLB Central talking about "robo-umps".  Apparently it's closer to being a reality than you might think.  He interviewed Commissioner Manfred about the idea and he says the technology is much closer to being reality than it was just a year ago.  Manfred was specifically referring to using technology to call balls and strikes.  We'd still have a home plate umpire but he wouldn't be calling balls and strikes anymore.

I'm not sure how I feel about that yet. I know it's been brought up many times over the last several years. I guess I'd have to understand more about the implementation of it and how it would work.

Wow, that's incredible. I've never heard of anyone striking out 9 guys in a row.

The Jays have Sam Gaviglio pitching today. He's a guy they picked up near the end of spring training and then sent to the minors. So far he's done really well starting a few games for the Jays, with an ERA in the 2s. He has never pitched in Boston before. a reporter asked John Gibbons what he thought it was like pitching in Fenway for the first time. He gave a typical Gibbons response.

"I don't know; I've never pitched in Fenway before."

I'm watching the Jays/Sox game on MLBN while listening to the Cardinals game on the radio. I forgot Oh was on the Jays. They sure have a lot of former Cardinals on the team.

Reyes was pulled after 4 innings. He didn't allow any runs but it was a stressful 4 innings in which he threw 73 pitches. He worked out of trouble in practically every inning.

I'll take that over any start a Jays' starter not named J.A. Happ has thrown lately.

Cards lost 3-2.  Dormant bats again.  If we had any kind of offensive consistency we'd be running away with the NL Central because the starting pitching ranks in the top 3 of the NL in just about every category.

Dormant bats have been a problem for the Jays as well. Except, they don't have the pitching to deal with that.

I read that it is the Jays' fourth worst month in franchise history. I feel like it's 2017 all over again.

He's on the DL. He had some shoulder issues in spring training, and I think he was fighting them through the first part of the season.

The Jays managed to get swept by Boston. They really just didn't look great the whole series. There are very few positives to take from it, except maybe that Kendrys Morales has started hitting the ball. Day off today.

Now they're saying Rhys Hoskins did suffer a fractured jaw from that foul tip.

Winnipeg has a local team in the American Association, an independent baseball league. They've actually won the championship the last two seasons. Anyway, Rafael Palmeiro (remember him?) is in the league and playing again at 53 years old. He plays for the Cleburne Railroaders. They come to town in the beginning of August, so I might try to catch one of those games.

I knew Palmiero was attempting a comeback but I didn't know where he finally ended up.

I'm watching the Angels/Tigers game. The Tigers starting pitcher just had to leave with an apparent oblique injury. Did you know that the pitcher coming in doesn't get as many warmup tosses as he wants? They said it's however many the home plate umpire deems necessary.

Is that new? Maybe part of the "pace of play initiatives"? I always thought the new pitcher could take as many as he wanted. That's a stupid rule. How the hell does the umpire know how many pitches a guy needs to get loose?

The vet who rescued that goose threw out the first pitch today. The announcers just said she took the goose home with her last night then took it to some veterinary hospital where it's under observation.

I always thought it was as long as he needed. It's news to me.

Oh crap.  I missed that.  At least it's not his arm.  Cardinal fans on the web site are brutal.  Like this:

Quote :
This situation feels like a “snowball” to me. How is a 10 day DL stint supposed to relieve a starting pitcher’s inflamed lat when he obviously couldn’t prepare himself with over a year off?

Put down the dmn bong and Xbox controller!

Quote :
What can we learn from this? When there's money on the line professional athletes lie about their physical condition. No way do I believe this all started yesterday afternoon. Throw out the MRI machine and put in a polygraph.

Quote :
I wonder, when will there finally be a movement in baseball amongst the coaching staffs to teach these kids to back off a little and learn the art of pitching rather than throwing as hard as they can over and over...

I don't like reading the comments of most Jays fans either; they have to be among the most negative people in the world.

The local sports report is saying that Reyes' lat strain is worse than the one that has kept Carlos Martinez on the DL for more than three weeks already so I'm not looking for anything from Reyes the rest of this year.

On the plus side, Martinez is supposed to make his first rehab start next week and Molina is scheduled to be back next week.
