Cardinals managed to take 2out of 3 at PNC Park this weekend.  Mikolas was a little off today giving up 4 ER in 6 innings but he only gave up 5 hits; the Pirates hit a bunch of "bleeders" and "quails" to take a 4-1 lead.  But the Pirates bullpen pulled "A Holland" (as in Greg) and coughed up 3 runs in the 8th (including walking one in) and Bud Norris picked up his 11th save in 11 attempts for a 6-4 win. Norris' ERA is 2.64 but his WHIP is a miniscule 0.95.

Oh and Mikolas walked a batter today.  That's news because it's only the 7th batter he's walked ALL SEASON (!)

Giving up 4 earned runs in 6 innings would be considered a positive for the Jays' starting pitchers.

Generally when an ERA is low, a WHIP is low. You think with an ERA of 2.64 the WHIP would be somewhere around 1.1 to 1.3. I've also seen it the other way where someone has an ERA that is low, but a witness that is higher than normal. I think some of it comes down to lock, but also the type of hits given up, home runs versus singles.

The Jays took 2 of 3 from the Phillies on the weekend. It's the first series win in quite a while.

I think it's because Norris doesn't walk many.  And Mikolas' WHIP seems to prove that.  His ERA is 2.58 but his WHIP is 0.98.

Pitching hasn't been the issue so far with St. Louis, even with Martinez and Wainwright on the DL.  It's the offense.  Marcel Osuna has been a bust to this point and until the last couple of weeks Carpenter was hitting below .200.  And now Dexter Fowler is out after getting hit in the knee cap by a pitch on Saturday.  But he's another one hitting below .200.  If not for Tommy Pham and Jose Martinez we'd have NO offense.

And the Phillies had been playing well.

That's definitely a positive. They lost the middle game of the series, 2-1. That was the game Garcia pitched. He went 7 innings, 5 hits, 1 run, 5 strikeouts, and no walks. That's one of the better starts from a Jays' pitcher this year. The Jays managed only 3 hits that game and were no-hit until the 7th.

I'm watching Quick Pitch on MLB Network where the recap all the games from the weekend. I didn't know the Mets signed Bautista.

I think I forgot to mention it. I'm not sure how he's doing in New York.

The Jays are in Boston this afternoon. Because they are facing a lefty (David Price), Gibbons decided to throw and all right-handed lineup against him. Because we have only two right-handed hitting outfielders, Russell Martin will be playing left today. I believe it's his first start ever in left field. He has started at third and shortstop this year, and I have seen him start at second other years.

EDIT: On the broadcast, they said Martin is the first player in over 50 years to start at catcher, third, shortstop, and left field in the same season.

Talk about versatility.

Cards gave vs the Brewers is just about to start.

The Jays are down 7-2 in the bottom of the 6th. Once again, a terrible start by a Jays' starter. Sanchez went 5 innings, 7 earned runs. And just as I finish that sentence, it's now 8-2.

In other great news, Donaldson seemed to tweak something running the bases and pulled himself out of the game. The way things are going, I wouldn't be surprised to see him on the DL again with a calf for hamstring issue.

I think it's pretty safe to write off this season. The starters have been terrible, the offense is passable at best, the bullpen is getting worn down, and we continually have people on the DL. I just don't see much changing.

Weaver gave up 4 runs in four innings and my other favorite bullpen pitcher gave up 3 runs in ONE inning.

He's probably real glad Greg Holland is on the roster because Holland is the only one with a worse ERA 9.36 vs 7.50.  But Holland is on the DL so guess who's going to see more innings...

I'm not sure why Cecil just can't put it together with the Cards. He was great with the Jays.

Earlier this year he was saying he finally found his breaking ball. He must have lost it again.

Did you see Rhys Hoskins of the Phillies foul a ball into his mouth? He swung at a cut fastball and just got enough of a piece of it to foul it right into his mouth. He went down bleeding like a stuck pig. Miraculously today they're saying he only had a big cut on his lower lip. I'm amazed he didn't knock out or break some teeth.

Did you see the cascade of blood he spit out?  Why is it that stuff on your head is so vascular?  Any cut to the nose, ears, mouth or neck just bleeds like crazy.  Like when you cut your neck shaving; the slightest nick just bleeds away.  And when I watch MMA or boxing, nose and ear cuts just cover the mat in blood.  Yet you can gash your arm or leg pretty badly and while there's blood it seems to stop pretty fast.

Cards are up 5-0 over Milwaukee in the 4th.  Carpenter's homered again; his 7th on the year and third in the 5th game of this road trip.  It's about time he got hot.

No, I didn't notice that. I was looking at it on a small screen at the time.

I know nosebleeds can be pretty bad. I've never noticed that ear ones are.

Cards won 6-1 last night. Wacha got his 6th win going 6 2/3 and allowing just the one run.

We're the stupid Facebook game today so I'll have to listen to the game on the radio. I sure hope the kill this concept after this season.

I saw that they want the game. Always good to get a win against the team in front of you.

The Jays weren't so fortunate. They got pummeled again, 8-3 by the Red Sox. Estrada didn't last very long, only 3 2/3, giving up 4 of the runs. This pretty much sums up how things have been going for the Jays lately.

I agree with you. That's fine if they want to put the game on Facebook, but don't make it exclusive.

I was reading a summary of yesterday's game, and they threw this out. This is how bad may has been.

This is the first time since 1979 that the Jays will not win back-to-back games in a full calendar month.

Ken Rosenthal is on MLB Central talking about "robo-umps". Apparently it's closer to being a reality than you might think. He interviewed Commissioner Manfred about the idea and he says the technology is much closer to being reality than it was just a year ago. Manfred was specifically referring to using technology to call balls and strikes. We'd still have a home plate umpire but he wouldn't be calling balls and strikes anymore.
