I guess the Reds were willing to take on the headaches.

That's definitely a better return for Harvey than I figured they'd get

The Jays beat Cleveland 5-2 last night. Garcia pitch 5 innings, give up 2 runs, but only 1 earned. That's pretty much what you'd like to see out of the 5th starter.

Garcia was struggling a bit in the 1st coming. He had already given up a run via a wild pitch and double. He managed to get two outs, but then walked and hit a guy. Gibbons comes out to the mound. You don't usually see the manager come out to the mound for the first mound visit of an inning. When asked later what he said, he answered "Throw the damn ball over the plate."

Al Hrabosky always rags on mound visits like that. He says he hated when his catcher, pitching coach or manager would come to the mound and say something like "Throw strikes". He'd say "What the hell do you think I'm trying to do????"

Thing is, it obviously worked. He got out of the inning on the next batter, and the only other run he gave up after that was unearned.

I think sometimes pitchers try to be too fine, nibbling on the corners, etc. when they just need to fire the ball in there.

I think it's more like "taking a break". If a pitcher is in a wild streak sometimes just breaking his bad rhythm can help. But I agree with Al; that would annoy me if I were a pitcher; don't come out and state the obvious. Maybe just say something like "Look, you're nitpicking. Take a deep breath and let it fly."

I'm not sure why Gibby came out. You'd think the pitching coach would do that.

When it rains it pours.  Carlos Martinez to the 10 day DL with a lat strain.  He leads the NL with a 1.62 ERA.

Cards hung on for a 2-1 win last night. That was the score when I went to bed. Miles Mikolas went 6.2 innings and allowed the one run. He's now 5-0 with an ERA of 2.51. How's this for control: he's now thrown 46.2 innings and only walked 3 batters while fanning 35. That and his 42 hits allowed make his WHIP .96. He's also been eating innings; he's now made 7 starts so he's averaging almost 7 innings per start. So far he looks like one of MLB's best off-season signings.

That IS great. I can only dare to dream for that from the Jays' starters. All our starters are horrible lately.

Speaking of horrible starts, Happ only went 3.1 innings yesterday and gave up 7 runs. The bullpen was decent, but the Jays lost 9-3.

That's another series loss. The last time the Jays won a series was a sweep of the Royals from April 16-18. They are now only 2 games above .500.

I'm watching the White Sox vs The Maddons. Contreras just hit a grand slam so it's already 5-0 Shlubs.

Side note: Some of the players in this game are wearing turtlenecks because the temp is 49 and it's windy. Chicago is about 4.5 hours from STL and here were supposed to tie a record high at 91 today.

Yeah, the weather is just bizarre lately. For example, we have the least amount of precipitation since records began 140 years ago. Since the beginning of January, we've only had 1 1/8 inch of precipitation. Contrast that with the West Coast where flooding is, and East Coast where they are having record floods.

Stroman is now on the 10 day DL with shoulder fatigue. I wouldn't be surprised if he's been dealing with something all season.

The Blue Jays have had a phenomenal amount of roster transactions this month. 30 to be exact.

Wow, that's "Cardinal-like". Makes it hard to have any team chemistry when you're constantly shuffling the roster.

On a similar note, with Carlos Martinez going to the 10-day DL, the Cardinals recalled pitcher Mike Mayers - FOR THE FOURTH TIME THIS SEASON! The guy said he keeps an apartment in St. Louis AND one in Memphis because he's been shuttled back and forth so many times. Fortunately it's only about 4 hours between the two cities but still...that would suck.

Laughing We've got a few guys like that as well. It's usually bullpen guys going back and forth when rested arms are needed, but it's occasionally for DL or rest issues.

Uh oh, I just checked the Cardinals' site to see who is starting tonight and it's Luke Weaver who has really sucked big time after his first two starts.  But that's not what the "uh oh" is for.

We also placed LHP Tyler Lyons on the 10 day DL.  But that's not what the "uh oh" is for either.

It's for this:  Guess who we activated from the DL to take Lyon's place?

Holy crap!  The local weather guy is predicting 94 for Sunday.  It's like July.  I bet it will be snowing in Chicago.

I talked to my Mom in Florida today and we have about the same temps they do.  WTH?

OK, I'm watching the first inning of the Cardinals/Padres game and I'm calling it now.  The starting pitcher for the Padres is a slopballing rookie lefty who is 1-1 with an ERA over 5.00; we are so done.   If we get 2 runs I'll be surprised.

EDIT: Well I'm already surprised.  DeJong hit a 3 run homer in the second to put STL up 3-0.  That's already more than I thought we'd do against this starter.

EDIT2:  OK, nevermind.  The Cardinals have hit 3 more homers in just the third inning alone and knocked the kid out.  It's 6-0 still in the third and we've already hit 4 homers.  In Petco which is supposed to be a tough place to hit homeruns.

Cards won 9-5.  Tommy Pham went 3-5 with a 2-run homer.  He's now batting .343 with a 1.043 OPS, 7 HR and 17 RBI out of the leadoff spot.  I was wondering if his numbers last year were a fluke; guess not.  It's pretty amazing given his serious eye problems.

Watching the D-Backs/Nationals game.

I knew Matt Adams would tear it up if given a chance to play full time - or at least be more than a pinch-hitter off the bench.  In 88 ABs with the Nats, Adams is hitting .284 with 10 HR, 25 RBI and a 1.065 OPS.  Talk about making your ABs count; 25 RBI in 88 ABs????

Cardinal bats are in mothballs again.

After taking the first two games out in San Diego the Cards lost 2-1 in 13 innings last night.  Today they're losing 4-2 in the bottom of the 8th.  Wainwright started this game coming off the DL and was awful.  He only lasted 2.1 innings and allowed 2 runs on 3 hits and 6 walks (!).  It took him over 70 pitches to record 7 outs.  It's looking more and more like Wainwright should have retired after last year.

Even if he'd pitched better it probably wouldn't have mattered because the Cards have whiffed 10 times again today.

Wow. The Reds swept a four game series from the Dodgers. That's pathetic. The Reds are terrible. Cards are 7-0 against them this year.

I had read your earlier post about your prediction, then noticed the score after that. I figured you'd be impressed.

Cool

To take 70 pitches to record 7 outs is pretty bad. I'm thinking I agree with you that Wainwright should have retired last year and ended on a high note. It's not fun watching someone who used to be a perennial All-Star struggle to be even replacement level.

Wow, I thought there was some NL rule about the Reds being allowed to sweep a series.

After taking the first game of the series against Boston, the Jays managed to drop the next two games. Another series loss with poor starting pitching and mediocre offense. They are now only one game above .500.

More high praise for Guerrero. I enjoy checking the box score to see what he's done more so then checking the Jays stats lately. Then again, the Jays stats are not very robust lately.
