Yeah, they created the position for me.  The coaches of our basketball, baseball, soccer and field hockey teams felt like they weren't getting enough local coverage.  They put the word out to the various English and writing professors looking for someone who could write and was into sports.  At the time I was working in the campus snack shop so I jumped at the chance.

Every week I had to write up a newsletter covering our sports teams and containing some quotes from the players and coaches.  Then I had to print off labels for all the local TV, radio and newspaper outlets, stuff the envelopes and put the labels on them.  Then I took the whole load of envelopes to the post office.  It was work-study so my "pay" was supposed to go toward tuition and books but somehow a couple bucks always managed to find their way into the beer fund.

I hardly ever heard anything after mailing them out each week but once in a great while what I wrote would appear in the local newspaper or get read on the radio or TV if they needed to fill time.  It also let to my getting an internship with the Harrisonburg paper my senior year where I covered high school sports.

That's a pretty good gig, especially for someone like you who love sports. I'm sure it was a lot better than working in the college cafeteria or something.

Another tidbit I got of MLB Network.

April was the first time in MLB history that a month had more strikeouts than hits in it.

That's pathetic.

Yikes, that is sad. I wonder what the cause of it is. I can't believe that players have suddenly become worse hitters. I think it has more to do with approach at the plate.

The Jays beat the Twins 7-4 in 10 innings. Sometimes the Twins' defense looks like a bad high school team. The Jays scored 3 runs in the 10th, with a great amount of help from two walks, to bobbles on the same play, a slightly wide throw, and two wild pitches/passed balls.

Kevin Pillar hit his 10th extra-base hit in a row.

During last night's Cardinals game I learned we're as much to blame as any other team. For April we had 211 hits and 245 strikeouts.

Yeah for a team that went to post-season last year, the Twins have looked really bad

Cards pulled one out of the fire for a change. I went to bed with them losing 2-1. Tommy Pham led off the game with a solo homer then James Shields retired 15 guys in a row. It was still 2-1 after the 7th so I figured it was a lost cause. But Carpenter homered to tie it in the 9th followed by an Ozuna double and a Molina single for a 3-2 win over the Chisox.

Same with the Jays, 252 to 229.

It's always a pleasant surprise when you give up on the game and then find out they pulled it out.

MLB Central just said the Cards are 5th in MLB in ERA at 3.39. I had no idea. Especially with our bullpen problems.

I wish the Jays had that.

If you were to separate starters from bullpen, the Jays would be near the bottom of starters and near the top of bullpen. Starters were expected to be a strength.

Found it.
https://www.fangraphs.com/leaders.aspx?pos=all&stats=rel&lg=all&qual=0&type=0&season=2018&month=0&season1=2018&ind=0&team=0,ts&rost=0&age=0&filter=&players=0

The Cards are 4th in starters' ERA with 3.32, while the Jays are 28th with 5.34. That's 2 runs per game!

The Jays are 2nd in relievers' ERA with 2.16, while the Cards are actually not bad at 11th with 3.46

Wow, I know Stroman has been struggling so far, but I didn't know it was this bad. He had a 3-up, 3-down inning. They said it is the FIRST(!) time this season.

It's the top of the 3rd and Gibbons just got tossed for the first time this season. Diaz took off for second in the batter took a check swing on what appeared to be ball 4. The umpire didn't check with the first-base ump right away, so Diaz thought it was a walk and slowed down to walk to 2nd. When the and finally appealed, it was called a strike. This quickly threw down the 2nd to get the double play. Gibbons said something from the dugout and got tossed before he could even come on the field. Another case of the home plate ump getting his feelings hurt.

Looks like both are teams are playing day games today.

Carlos Martinez just homered with 2 out in the bottom of the 6th to give St Louis a 1-0 lead.  That's his first career HR and it was 417ft so it wasn't a "cheapie". Only the second Cardinals hit.  He's only allowed 3 hits to the White Sox.  This game is flying by; it's not even an hour and a half old.

Too bad you can't bring Greg Holland in to relieve him.

A 417-foot home run is out of pretty much any park.

Stroman actually pitched pretty well today. He went 7 innings, gave up 2 runs on 6 hits. Unfortunately, it's the bottom of the 8th and the Jays haven't scored yet.

Still the bottom of the 8th and the bullpen has decided it wants to pitch poorly today. It's 4-0, bases-loaded, and 2 outs.

Leone tried to blow it for STL he allowed two inherited runners to score in the 8th.  But Bud Norris bailed him out and picked up the save in a 3-2 win.

The Maddons come to town next

No such luck for the Jays; they got shut out for the first time this year.

The Jays have a doubleheader in Cleveland tomorrow to make up games that got weathered out a couple weeks ago. They head to Tampa the following day.

I thought both of the runners who scored in the 8th were charged to Martinez but I guess not because on the post game show they just said this is his 5th consecutive start allowing 1 run or less. Yet he's only 4-3.

Watching MLB Tonight's recap of the day's action. Looks like the Jays have the same problem the Cardinals have; throw a rookie out there on the mound that the team has never seen before and it's all over.

Yeah. And being a doubleheader today, Cleveland is bringing up a guy from AAA to make hist first ML start. I can imagine how this is going to go.

Whoever came up with this schedule must have been drunk. The Cardinals had a 6 game home stand that ended last Wednesday. Then they had Thursday off when they flew to Pittsburgh for a three game series there. They had Monday off flying back to St. Louis and played two games against the White Sox. Now they're off again today waiting for the Cubs to come in. So they had 3 off days in a week.

I'm watching the Yankees/Astros game and the one Houston announcer made a reference to Pong.  They spent the next minute and a half trying to explain to the young female roving reporter what Pong was.   It's funny to think how long ago that was and how many adults weren't even born yet then.

HAHAHAHA! Now they showed what it was on TV. She's like "What's that???? What's the object of the game?"

That's bizarre scheduling.

Garcia was cruising along through his first 3 innings and the Jays were up 5-0 going into the bottom of the 4th. Between the 6 runs he gave up in the inning and the 1 the bullpen gave up, they are now losing 7-5 going to the top of the 5th.

That's usually how he goes when he has a bad game.  He'll have one "blowup" inning. He very seldom gives up a run an inning; it's usually goose eggs then BOOM! 6 or 7 in one inning.

This is hard to believe: In the Yankees game the Astros finally scored after 28 consecutive scoreless innings. The Astros went more than 3 games worth of innings without scoring??? The Astros????

I'm old enough to have played Pong.

It became a running gag; every couple of innings when they went to commercial break between innings they'd show the Pong screen behind the linescore.  Funny stuff.

I remember begging my parents to buy my brother and me an Atari for Christmas and one year they finally did.  He and I played the crap outta Pong until I realized he was much better at it than I was and I decided I didn't like the game anymore.
