He's doing great. It's the bottom of 6 and he's only given up 1 hit, struck out 8, and hasn't walked a guy.

It's the top of the 8th now. Verlander didn't even go to 3 balls on a batter until the top of the 7th.

And isn't his ERA under 1?

It was. He gave up 2 runs in the 7th-inning, so it now sits at a massive 1.10. His WHIP is an equally bloated 0.77.

That guy is incredible. I think both Verlander and Max Scherzer are better pitchers than Kershaw. I think Kershaw's overrated; he's good but not nearly as good as people seem to think he is. And the Cardinals have owned him for the most part.

Watching the Mets @ Cardinals.  Currently 3-1 Cards in the 4th.  Hopefully we don't blow it like we did last night.

EDIT:  Now this is INTERESTING baseball.

Bottom of the 4th and DeJong leads off with a double.  Next batter pops up.  Kolten Wong hits a little dribbler up the first base line and beats it out DeJong to third.  Wacha lays down a suicide bunt and the Mets throw it away at home.  4-1 Cards,  Wong to third, Wacha on first. Next batter HBP; bases loaded one out.  Now full count on Fowler.

EDIT2;  And Fowler walks;5-1.

It's the old story; put the ball in play and good things can happen.  The Cardinals have 2 runs in, still have the bases loaded with 1 out and there's only really been one hard-hit ball in the inning.  Mets are pulling Matz.  None of this whiffing crap; and the Cardinals are more guilty of that than most teams.

Force out, infield single and it's now 7-1.  This is "small ball" at its finest.  Inning over; Cards plate 4 runs and only really had one ball out of the infield. That's how baseball should be; lots of action. And not just because St. Louis was doing it; I wish innings like that happened more often across MLB because that's what makes me love the game.

I agree! Another one is Chris Sale.

Baseball happens in situations. Weird and strange things can happen. It's one of the reasons I didn't agree with the automatic intentional walk. A ball can be thrown wide and a runner moves up, or its thrown too far over the plate and the pattern lines it into the outfield.

Mets/Cardinals are in the 13th tied at 3.  Syndergaard and Martinez started this game.  It was 2-2 after 9.

EDIT: Just ended; Cards scored a run in the bottom of the 13th

I'm watching the Cubs/Brewers game. Yu Darvish just threw a 64mph curveball. That's almost an "eephus" pitch

It didn't quite have the rainbow arc of a true eephus pitch but considering it's about 30mph slower than his fastball it's no wonder the batter was shaking his head.

Watching the Cardinals/Pirates game (Cards currently leading 4-0 in the 4th). The Cardinal announcer just dropped this stat about Miles Mikolas who's starting tonight for STL:

Mikolas just ran the count full on the Pirate batter and that's the first 3 ball count Mikolas has had in 39 straight hitters.

Mikolas is through 7 with a 5-2 lead.

According to the announcers that's the third consecutive game that Mikolas has pitched at least 7 innings and only 5 other MLB pitchers have done that so far this year.

I wasn't very impressed when they signed this guy out of Japan but so far I have to admit it's been a great signing.

Boy I sure am glad we signed Greg Holland. Bottom of the 9th 5-2 lead and we brought this loser in. It's now 5-5 and the Pirates have the winning run on third with no outs. Holland got NO ONE out!

Holy crap! That's pretty amazing. Like you said, he's been a pretty impressive pickup.

The Cards have had absolutely no luck closing out games this season.

After a very even series against the Red Sox, the Jays managed to look fairly disinterested against the very poor Texas Rangers, losing 2 of 3 on the weekend.

Grichuk made a very good/lucky catch. I loved this comment on a blog that I read.
For me, the play of the game was when Randal Grichuk looked like a dude drunkenly stumbling down the street at 3 am trying to prevent his burrito from falling over and somehow turned it into two outs.

I wish I could find a screen shot of the graphic MLB Central just did. They were talking about Ozzie Albies of the Braves. They were calling it "Ozzfest" and they had the rest of the lineup written in the fonts of various bands. I recognized Metallica, Iron Maiden, Def Leppard, Megadeth, AC/DC and several others but there were a few I couldn't identify.

The Jays beat the Twins 7-5 yesterday. Lance Lynn pitched for the Twins and was ineffective, as he has been all season. I'm glad the Jays signed Garcia instead of Lynn.

Grichuk went on the DL for a knee strain. Apparently it happened when he stumbles then made that catch on Sunday.

Well that should cut down on the team's strikeouts

MLB Central is showing a feature on "The Streak" in Baltimore.  Actually, it's the OTHER streak, not Cal Ripken.  It's about the Orioles starting the 1988 season with 21 straight losses.

That's actually pretty amazing when you think about it.  They're talking to Fred Lynn, Frank Robinson, Billy and Cal Ripken among others.

They said one of the jokes going around was "What do the Baltimore Orioles and Michael Jackson have in common?  They both wear gloves for no apparent reason."

Hey!  They showed a shot of Larry Sheets shaking his head in the dugout.  He graduated from my college; I used to cover him when I was the Sports Information Director there - that was my work-study program.  He went to tiny Eastern Mennonite College.  He had one really good year for Baltimore in 1987 when he hit over .300 with 31 homers and something like 90 RBi but that was about it.

My first thought when they said he hit the DL was "At least he hit something".

I remember that streak. They were absolutely horrible team that season. It's really surprising that they were that bad at the beginning, because they did have some pretty good players.

I think I remember Larry Sheets; at least the name sounds familiar. I didn't know you were the sports information director in college. That's a cool story.

Yeah, they created the position for me.  The coaches of our basketball, baseball, soccer and field hockey teams felt like they weren't getting enough local coverage.  They put the word out to the various English and writing professors looking for someone who could write and was into sports.  At the time I was working in the campus snack shop so I jumped at the chance.

Every week I had to write up a newsletter covering our sports teams and containing some quotes from the players and coaches.  Then I had to print off labels for all the local TV, radio and newspaper outlets, stuff the envelopes and put the labels on them.  Then I took the whole load of envelopes to the post office.  It was work-study so my "pay" was supposed to go toward tuition and books but somehow a couple bucks always managed to find their way into the beer fund.

I hardly ever heard anything after mailing them out each week but once in a great while what I wrote would appear in the local newspaper or get read on the radio or TV if they needed to fill time.  It also let to my getting an internship with the Harrisonburg paper my senior year where I covered high school sports.

Larry Sheets played baseball and basketball for us and was a star at both. He also later married the captain of our field hockey team. I talked to both of them practically every week for the newsletter.

Another tidbit I got of MLB Network.

April was the first time in MLB history that a month had more strikeouts than hits in it.

That's pathetic.
