Bud Norris picked up the first Cardinals save of the season today by striking out the side in the 9th.†Greg Holland is supposed to be here Monday so everyone in the bullpen will be sliding down a notch.† Actually with guys like Holland,†Norris, Leone, Matt Bowman, Jordan Hicks, Luke Gregerson and eventually Alex Reyes, the Cardinals may try the "5 innings by the starter then bullpen to death" strategy.

"Bullpen to death" works for awhile until they get worn out. Why is it taking Holland so long?

Haha. The cold played havoc with several MLB games lately, but how's this from the Lansing (Michigan) Lugnuts, the Jays' A-level affiliate:

The wildest game was in Lansing, where they beat Great Lakes, 6-4. The temperature hovered around freezing point and contributed to some significant control problems. In particular, Great Lakes walked 12 batters, including six from their starter who didnít make it out of the first innings with 27 pitches and just 3 strikes. That allowed Lansing to score four runs over the first two innings without a hit, and in fact they were no hit through six innings.

Yesterday's game time temperature for the Cardinals game was the coldest start to a Cardinal home game in their history.† It was 37 degrees with a wind chill of 29.† It's slightly warmer today; in the low 40s.

Well after a good start by Luke Weaver (6 1/3 IP,†0 run 4 hits, 7K) the bullpen blew it.† Leone took the loss for serving up a 2-run HR in the 8th.† Final was Snakes 4, Cards 1

BTW, there was a "bench clearing" in the second inning and it's still confusing what happened.† Apparently several Dbacks batters thought called third strikes were actually low.† When AJ Pollock was called out, he started arguing and manager Torey Lovullo came out arguing.† He apparently said something about Molina because all of a sudden Molina started trying to get to him and the umpire had to separate them.† naturally both dugouts and bullpens emptied but nothing happened.

Apparently Lovullo knows what he said was "a poor choice of words" because he apologized in a post-game press conference.† But I expect MLB will hand down a fine to Molina because he touched an umpire.† The fact that Molina wasn't ejected tells me the ump understood why he was so upset.† I'd love to know the actual words that were said. That's the maddest I've seen Molina since the infamous "Cueto kicks like a girl" incident.

EDIT:† OK, Molina just had a locker room press conference and apparently Lovullo kept calling Molina a "MF'er" and Molina finally heard it enough times.† I don't know, still seems like overreaction by Molina to me.† At least it wasn't some racial or homophobic slur which is what I thought would have provoked such a reaction.

Lovullo must have been some upset as well. He was the Jays' bench coach for several years and always seemed to be a good guy. They can probably both chock it up to "heat of the moment", but it's still something that shouldn't happen from either of them. If you or I came unglued like that at a work meeting, we'd be long gone! And for sure Molina will get a suspension because bumping an ump during something like that always seems like an automatic.

When you score only 1 run, you usually don't have a chance at winning.

The Jays won 7-4 today to take the series in Texas. Garcia gave up 3 runs in 5 1/3, but he really did pitch much better than that sounds. He just made 1 bad pitch with a runner on in the 6th, otherwise he was great.

Other thoughts and notes:

> Solarte walked 6 times in the 3 games. He's also a fun guy to watch.
> Smoak seems even better than last year. He has really good, quality at bats.
> Grichuk has been an absolute rally killer so far. He's in an 0-for-26 stretch.

Those reviews of Garcia and Grichuk both sound typical to what they did here.† Garcia always pitched like an ace except for a few pitches which went for long balls.† And Grichuk going 0-26 sounds about right too.† You watch, the Jays will either bench him or send him to AAA and he'll come back up and hit like a house afire.

I'd like to see the Jays bring someone up if Grichuk doesn't pull out of it in a couple weeks.

That's probably what will happen and then someone else will either get hurt or suck and they'll bring Grichuk back and he'll be Babe Ruth for about 2 or 3 weeks then go back to sucking.† We saw that at least 2 or 3 times here.

I really hope MLB doesn't adopt this rule. Since they first mentioned it, I thought it was a stupid idea.

They tried something similar in the "MLB World Games" - or whatever the hell it's called with all the MLB player split up and play for their home countries in a stupid, World Cup-style tournament which I have zero interest in.† Except in there teams started with runners on first AND second in extra innings.† And yeah, I didn't like the idea there either.

Especially since all his gimmicks seemed geared toward one thing; speeding up the game.† While I admit that sometimes games drag on too long (especially in the AL - thanks DH), I think the best way to speed up the game is to tell umpires to call the textbook strike zone of chest to knees.† If all home plate umps did that I guarantee you games would be a LOT quicker because batters wouldn't stand there taking pitches the whole game.

Watching the Cardinals trade "punches" with the Brewers (metaphorically speaking).† Brewers jumped out to a 2-0 lead after 2.† Cards took a 3-2 lead in the third but Milwaukee took back the lead 4-3 in the 4th.† Now in the bottom of the 4th the Cards have DeJong on 2nd with 1 out after a double (breaking a terrible 0-12 stretch for him where he'd struck out 8 times including 5 in one game).

During tonight's game the announcers said that the home plate ump said he didn't eject Molina because his reaction was "understandable" and that the physical contact between himself and Molina was just "incidental" and a natural reaction.† In other words he's saying Molina didn't touch him because he was upset with him which might carry some weight with MLB.

But I still think Molina should be punished somehow. at least a fine.† If the rule is you can't touch an umpire during an argument then it shouldn't matter what the argument was about or if the umpire was the intended target or not because that starts down a slippery slope.

Well, welcome to St. Louis Greg Holland.

He came in to a 4-4 game in the 10th and walked FOUR batters including walking in the winning run. Cards lost to Milwaukee 5-4.

FOUR batters?! I thought he just walked in the winning run. That's BRUTAL.

I think you are correct. The rule is the rule. If you tripped over something and then fell into the umpire, that might be a different case. But when you're standing there arguing or discussing something and you bump even "accidentally", I think you still deserve something. If MLB doesn't level out a fine may set a precedent and create a gray area.

The Jays beat the Trash Birds 7-1. It was actually a much closer game than that sounds. It was 2-1 going into the 9th. Baltimore proceeded to load the bases and walk in one run before Donaldson hit a slam. Before that, it was a pretty good pitcher's duel.

Boy, after his hot start DeJong is really struggling.† At one point he whiffed 7 times in a row.† He leads the team in strikeouts by a wide margin.† He just popped up with runners on first and second and two outs in the third inning and I think I heard a smattering of boos.†

It's not a typical STL crowd because it's still pretty cold here so the stadium is only about half full which is HIGHLY unusual for a Cardinal game.† The result is that if you have a "leather-lunged" section in this type of crowd, you're going to hear them a lot more.

But regardless, DeJong looks like he needs a day off.

Yes, he did have a really hot start. Now he's pulling a Grichuk!

Attendance has been down in many places because of the weather. The White Sox and Rays only had 974 fans.

The Jays beat Baltimore last night, 2-1. It was a scoreless pitcher's duel until the 8th inning. Aaron Sanchez had a no-hitter going until then. His stuff was absolutely filthy. Each team scored 1 run in the 8th, and then Granderson ordered a home run in the 9th to put the Jays ahead. Osuna came in to get his 100th career save. He is the youngest ever to get to 100 saves. He is 1 year and 184 younger than Francisco Rodriguez.
