I was wondering if you would see it that way. It seems to be the way the Cards have done things the last few years. There is risk involved, but it can also pay off.

The Jays do things the opposite way. There is also a risk to that.

I was just reading the writeup on the Cardinal web site about the signing.  I guess this is what management is banking on:

Quote :
The 24-year-old DeJong didn't make his Major League debut until last May 28, meaning the deal covers his three remaining pre-arbitration years and three additional arbitration years before he can become a free agent in 2024. The 24-year-old DeJong homered on the first swing of his first Major League at-bat last May, then spent the summer slugging his way into the Cardinals' record books. DeJong hit 25 home runs, the most ever for a St. Louis rookie shortstop, while ranking among the National League's top rookies in doubles (26), slugging percentage (.532), total bases (222), RBIs (65) and runs (55).

He hit 22 home runs at Double-A Springfield in '16, his first full professional season, then 38 between Triple-A Memphis and the Majors in '17. He finished the year as the Cards' primary No.3 hitter and with an .857 OPS that ranked third among MLB shortstops.

As you said, this is a boom or bust type deal.  if he repeats or comes close to last year's performance then the contract is a steal for the Cardinals because he'd definitely command a lot more in arbitration.  But given our track record on these things, I'm leery.

EDIT: I just re-read that last part I quoted. DeJong was a 4th round draft pick yet his first full season of pro ball was at Double A??? Wow.

They seem willing to take the risk on it. If it works out, great. If not, they get the same thing that happened with Diaz.

Looks like Lance Lynn turned down a 2yr/$20M offer from the Twins. Good for him, he's worth more than that.

Quote :
Lynn, 30, missed all of 2016 after having Tommy John surgery, but he's 72-47 with a 3.38 ERA (114 ERA+) in his career. In his past three seasons, he pitched to a 3.06 ERA (129 ERA+) and put together a 3.43 ERA (124 ERA+) last season in his first year back from TJ.

While Lynn isn't an ace, he's a mid-rotation workhorse. The going rate for those guys once they hit free agency has long been significantly more than two years and $20 million. Hell, Tyler Chatwood got three years and $38 million earlier this offseason from the Cubs.

I'm thinking he'll probably go for 2 years/$30M or 3 years/$39M.

The Jays have two split-squad games today; one against Detroit and the other against Pittsburgh. It's the 2nd inning of the Pittsburgh game and there are 0 out, the Jays have scored 3 runs in the inning, and a ball has not left the infield yet. Spring training baseball.

I still keep hoping the Cards re-sign Lynn. Give him a 1 yr/$15M contract filled with incentives.

How is their rotation stacking up so far?

It's full of question marks.  With Martinez at #1, Wainwright at #2 (is he done?), Wach at #3 (how long will he last) and young Luke Weaver at #4 the rotation is not solid at all.

I see Wainwright started today and went 3 2/3 allowing one run on 3 hits while fanning 4 and walking 2 against the Nats B squad.

Meh...

That seems like one of their weakest rotations in the last several years.

It is which is why I don't understand why they don't make a run at Lynn.

We also have Alex Reyes who would be a prime candidate for the rotation but he's coming off TJ surgery and won't even be ready until May.

There are several other good free-agent options as well.

The Jays played the Orioles today and had their top three prospects (Vladimir Guerrero Jr., Bo Bichette, and Anthony Alford) in the lineup. Guerrero and Bichette have never played above high A and were up from the minor-league camp for the first time. Apparently they all like hitting and are pretty good at it!

1. Guerrero (3B): 4 singles in 5 at bats, 2 runs.
2. Bichette (SS): 2 singles in 3 at bats, 1 run, 2 RBIs
3. Alford (RF): 2 doubles, 1 triple, 3 runds, 1 RBI

Alford will start at AAA, while Guerrero and Bichette will likely start at AA. The future is bright!

I can't wait to see Guerrero in the bigs.  If he's half as good as everyone says he is he'll be fun to watch. I always liked his father so naturally I'm pulling for the son as well.

Martinez started today vs Florida.

4 IP/ 5H /2BB / 4K / 1ER

A good start but c'mon, it's against the Marlins, not exactly a real test.

That's not bad, but you would definitely like to see less than 2 walks in only 4 innings.

Lance Lynn signed with the Twins for 1 year, $12M.

Crap. The Cards could have beaten that offer.

They gave him a $17.4M qualifying offer.

I guess the market wasn't what he thought it would be.

I like this article about Marco Estrada's changeup. Everyone knows he has one of the best, if not the best, changeups in the majors. I always knew that you had to have the same arm angle, arm speed, and so on, but I always thought it was just the grip that changed. Turns out that's not the case for his.

No Jays today, so I'm watching the Orioles versus Yankees. There are only two televised games today, and this one is better than Tampa and Pittsburgh.

Wainwright started today against Houston and went 5 allowing 0ER on 4 hits. His ERA this spring is 0.84

We need Wainwright to be good, maybe not his old "ace" self but decent.

Probably a decent middle rotation starter.

They probably talked about this on MLB network, but deep Brewers' take on the Sandlot scene is pretty good.

Yeah I saw that.

Something must be wrong with me because I've never actually seen "The Sandlot" but the clip I saw on MLB Network played the scene from the movie first followed by the Brewers' re-enactment.
