So in another deal that's not going to knock anyone's socks off, the Cardinals have traded outfield Randal Grichuk to the Jays in exchange for pitchers Dominic Leone and Connor Greene. Never heard of either of those guys but apparently Leone broke out last year as a good setup man for Toronto and Greene is reportedly the 5th best pitching prospect in the Jays' system.

Grichuk is a frustrating player. He'll show flashes of brilliance but then start whiffing constantly. He's been sent to the minors each of the last two seasons but last year even with that he managed to hit 22 HR and drive in 59 runs. Maybe a change of scenery will do him good. And he can play all 3 outfield positions so he can provide some flexibility.

Greene was a 2013 7th round pic. He's a guy who can throw 100 and occasionally hit the side of a barn. Like, seriously. He's never made it past AA because of control issues. Last year he pitched 126 innings with a 5.39 ERA, 92 strikeouts and 83(!) walks. I'm not sure how he ranked as the Jays' 5th pitching prospect.

Leone is a guy we picked up on waivers before last season who was really good out of the pen. If he can repeat, you'll get a good BP piece.

I'm not sure what's with the Jays stockpiling outfielders. I would have thought they'd try to give one of their top two OF prospects a shot, but now they have Grichuk, Granderson, Pillar, Pierce, and Carerra, plus Diaz and Solarte who could fill in OF. They've got to be planning to get rid of at least one of the outfielders.

I think they are planning to have Grichuk play RF. I read he's good defensively. He's also got power, which plays well in the AL east. I hope he can cut back on the strikouts.

Grichuk's defense is just as frustrating as his offense. The guy has all the tools but somehow just can't seem to put it all together. Last year he's made a great throw from the outfield on one play and then a few innings later he'd misjudge a ball and let it get over his head.

And you know what else Grichuk will never live down? The Angels drafted him one pick ahead of Mike Trout. How would you like that little tidbit following your career around?

There are still a lot of free agents out there to sign. There's got to be a big flurry coming up soon.

Hot Stove was talking about it this morning and they think a lot of those guys are going to be out of work. They think the players and/or their agents still think teams are going to sign them to long-term contracts and consensus is those days are over unless a player is 25 or younger. They gave the statistics of how many of those types of contracts have ever AT BEST, broken even for the team signing it. It worked out to about 1 in 10. And with all the sabermetrics and younger GMs, teams are realizing signing a late 20's or later player to a 7 year contract is a waste of money. So good luck getting that 7 year deal JD Martinez...

If that's the case, it's been long overdue. Players expecting massive deals at age 30+ just isn't good for teams. Almost every one of those contracts is a giant albatross near the end.

I'm really excited about the Jays' top two prospects. I'm not sure will be in the majors this year, unless it's in September, but I'm pretty certain they will be in 2019.

Me too. And as much as I hated Chipper Jones when he was playing he definitely deserved to go in on the first ballot.

Yes, Jones deserved it. He was also a jerk.

Speaking out the Vlads (weren't we?), several of the prospect rankings and previews compared his capabilities to Albert Pujols and Miguel Cabrera had during their primes. I'll take anything even close to that!

I haven't heard that name for a while. He's battled some injuries and other issues and hasn't really got settled in the majors yet.

Boy the NL Central is going to be interesting this year now that the Brewers signed Yelich and Cain. If they get any pitching at all, look out.

They should be very good offensively.

The NL Central is going to be like the AL East with a few strong teams beating up on each other.

The AL Central, on the other hand, has only one good team (Cleveland).

The Jays signed Jaime Garcia to a 1 year deal for $10M. I think they probably overpaid but he does have the potential to be a steal at that price as well. He was a pretty dependable starter for the Cardinals when he wasn't hurt - which wasn't too often. Plus he's lefthanded.

Garcia has a career record of 67-55 with a 3.69 ERA and 852 strikeouts in 185 appearances.

There is also an option for a second year. I believe the deal is for $8M, plus up to $2M in incentives. I think it's a good deal. He'll be the fifth starter. Hopefully he stays healthy.

The guy has had ever "pitcher surgery" there is; TJ, shoulder and thoracic outlet. I hope he does well in Toronto. I always liked him as a Cardinal.

The Cards and Jays have had some pretty good players over the years who have played for both teams. On Tuesday I was listening to a Jays podcast and they had Tom Henke on it.

In the first inning, Granderson led of with a homer. Grichuk walked and Diaz hit an RBI double in their first at bats.

EDIT: Diaz just made a slick play by flipping the ball to second with his glove to start a quick double play.

Hopefully Diaz is rejuvenated. He showed flashes of offensive and defensive brilliance his rookie year when he made the All Star game. But he sure was bad on both sides of the ball last year which is why he lost his job.

Are they using the new "pace of play" rules in Spring Training? I would assume they are

Yes, they seem to be. I'm not sure I really like all of these rule changes. As long as it improves the game and doesn't change or less in it, I'll like it.

Grichuk singled in his second at-bat; Diaz struck out.

Speaking of Diaz, they were talking on the broadcast about how Diaz worked out for the Jays and played a simulated game a few years ago, but ended up signing with Cardinals instead.

Carlos Martinez is having a bobblehead night this season. It comes with "mystery hair". You don't have any idea what kind of hair yours will have until you get it. That cracks me up.

When they had a Stroman one a couple years ago, it had a big bubble of bubble gum.

One of the funniest lines I heard during a Cardinal broadcast last year was when Martinez had those awful extensions sticking out of his hat. Tim McCarver said "What's with that hair? It looks like Carlos' head is being attacked by a squid."
