So evidently STL gave up pitcher Sandy Alcantera and 3 low minor league prospects for Ozuna. Alcantera pitched a few games in relief late last year for the Cards but he's a projected starter. He was the #9 prospect in the Cardinals farm system. I don't know anything about the other guys.

I like the deal.

I think Miami is just trying to stockpile prospects and hoping they hit on a few of them.

It's the usual Marlins business model. Stockpile a ton of minor league guys, some of them become good MLB players, win the World Series, can't afford to keep the good MLB players, repeat.

Yeah, the Marlins have a track record of that. If they aren't the worst franchise in MLB, they are darn close to it.

I bet if you assembled an All-Ex-Marlins Team it would look a lot like the All_Ex_Expos teams you see floating around. Both teams have had some great players that they just couldn't keep but if they had been able to they'd have been dynastic franchises.

I think so as well.

There were some darned good Expos that came through, and several are or will be in the Hall of Fame: Andre Dawson, Tim Raines, Gary Carter, Vladimir Guerrero, Pedro Martinez, Larry Walker, and others were very good: Andre Galarraga, Jeff Reardon, Tim Wallach.

Like Mozeliak said, it wasn't a totally philanthropic move because Piscotty had nowhere to play anymore for the Cardinals. But since they could have traded him to multiple places the fact that his mother is only about 25 miles from Oakland swung the deal. And all we got back was a couple of minor league players. I don't even know who they are but really, we wouldn't have gotten much for him anyway because Piscotty just signed a 6 year/ $35M contract last April so the receiving team is eating that.

I wish him well there.

Apparently the Cardinals are aggressively pursuing Donaldson but the Jays aren't biting

They've said repeatedly that they don't want to trade him.

Go for Machado instead.

They're said to be after him too.

Personally I'd be OK with the Cardinals taking a one-year flyer on Adrian Gonzalez now that he's a FA.  Move Carpenter back to third and see what Gonzalez has left in the tank.

That also would be the usual FA "dumpster diving" the Cardinals do. Although in this case I'd support it if the contract is reasonable.

The Jays are kings of "dumpster diving". Of course, they have found a few gems now and then.

I saw this story in my daily MLB emails. It's a sad one, but also a good one.

Sounds like he was encouraged by them, and now he is doing what he can to encourage that boy. I love stories like this.

I know you're not a big hockey fan, but I like the Leafs. Anyway, check out this story from last night's Leafs versus Sharks game. The story is hilarious. I know you don't usually get the videos in the stories from this site, but I found a YouTube one that I posted below the story.

They just showed that on Intentional Talk. It's like something out of a cartoon.

The Jays traded for Yangervis Solarte from the Padres over the weekend. They gave up their 18th-ranked prospect, plus another prospect waaay down the list. He gives extreme flexibility in the infield and basically allows the Jays to give any of the other infielders a day off or at DH. Solarte is on a reasonable contract and has a couple option years remaining.

The Jays didn't give up much to get Solarte. He's affordable and still leaves them money to sign an impact player or two.

Today the guys on Hot Stove were wondering why in the world the Cardinals are not going after Mike Moustakas. He seems like he'd be a perfect fit. He'd sure look good in our lineup.

He had a great year last year, but he typically hasn't been that good. He's a solid third baseman, but nowhere near Donaldson, Machado, etc. I think I would rank him somewhere in the middle third of MLB 3Bs. He's certainly much better than many other options, and would be much more affordable.

Exactly. He's not going to hit 38 HRs again but he's good for 20+ and bats .260 or so. So he'd be a cheap solution to our third base dilemma. Unless he's asking for an unreasonable amount of money.

Yep.  I just checked.  Guess who his agent is.

That probably explains it then. Screw that, play Jedd Gyorko and take your chances. Or go after Hosmer to play first and move Carpenter back to third. Oh wait, same agent.

Several of the "top 10 free agents" are Boras clients. I think that explains why only 8 of the top 10 have signed.

How cool is this?

Matt Holliday is back in St. Louis for the kickoff of the "Homers For Health" campaign he started while he was here. The program raises funds for Cardinal Glennon's Children's Hospital based on the number of homers and strikeouts Cardinal players have.

When he left for the Yankees, Holliday named Matt Carpenter his successor to head the charity yet here Holliday is again, back promoting his charity.

He's said he wants to play one more year in MLB and since he's still unsigned I wish he'd sign one more year with St. Louis but that's probably not realistic because at this point he needs to be a DH. C'mon Toronto, give the guy a shot!

I've been out with the flu for several days. I'm still dealing with some of the cough.

He does sound like a really good guy. Baseball needs more good guys. If the Jays needed yet another DH, I'd say go for it. Unfortunately, they have almost half a team of DHs some days!

The Cards should give him one year contract where he can tune in a few different places and just work with some of the younger guys. Why not give him a send off.

The Jays signed Curtis Granderson to a one-year deal for $5 million. I don't love the deal and I don't hate it either. I think if they were to use him as a platoon player against right-handed pitchers only, that might be pretty good. I can't imagine their plan is to have him play every day, otherwise they might as well re-signed Bautista for another season. The Jays do need to get younger and faster in at least one of the corner outfield positions.

I thought of that. He could spell Carpenter at first and some of the outfielders as well as pinch hit.

Saw that. As you say, it's not a terrible deal but nothing earth-shaking either.
