I think he was taking some reps at third, and possibly left field as well.

It's a good trade for the Jays.  I think the Cardinals just wanted to free up a AAA roster spot because the way DeJong played both offensively and defensively the shortstop job is his. DeJong hit .285 with 26 HR and 65 RBI in 417 AB. And he was solid in the field.

As long as he doesn't flop the way Diaz did in his second year.

The prospect the Jays sent to the Cards didn't seem to be much either. He had a .699 OPS in single or AA, but supposedly has some potential. May be a change of scenery will be good for both players. That's what makes a good deal.

That's what I thought when I heard about the trade. Sometimes these kinds of "minor" trades end up blossoming on both sides. New team, new coaches, new teaching methods...you never know.

And I've seen several guys on MLB Network talking about how they felt about the first time they were traded at any level.

To a man they all said that at first they were devastated. But then someone told them that instead of looking at it like your first team rejected you, look at it like another team wants you. That's a great perspective.

I've heard that perspective brought up before. In order to have a trade, one team has to WANT something from another team. They just don't receive something the other team doesn't want.

So to both the guys in this trade, good luck with your new teams.

If the Jays immediately plug Diaz in as their starting shortstop I look forward to seeing how he does.  I can tell you this much, attitude-wise he was never a problem here. It sounds like the bar is pretty low for the Jays at that position so Diaz could really please fans in Toronto.

Yep, good luck to them both.

Diaz won't get plugged in as the starting shortstop, or starting anywhere. They have Tulowitzki at short, Devon Travis at second, and Donaldson at third. I would expect Diaz to be the "fourth infielder" who could fill a hole at either of those for the occasional day off, or take the place of someone due to injury. And as this season proved, there will be a lot of injuries.

That's right, I forgot the Jays have Tulo. Boy that deal didn't work out very well for the Jays. Besides being hurt a lot he just hasn't seemed to live up to the power I would have expected fro him. "Coors Field Effect" maybe?

I'm not sure it's even the Coors Effect. That might explain a loss of power, but not contact rate. His defense has been excellent, when healthy.

Lots of stuff over the weekend, but it seems most people are talking about the Stanton trade. To me that trade seems like a joke. Miami pretty much gave away Stanton for a decent second baseman and two so-so prospects. I'm sure almost any team could have come up with something different, but it seems obvious that he really only wanted to go to a few teams. The best quote I read in one of the stories was something to the effect of "When he was with the Yankees, Derek cheater helped him win 5 World Series. Now that he's with the Marlins, he's trying to win them another."

This trade doesn't have much effect on the Jays, as they already had no chance to win the division and could make it to you likely 3rd place at best. Would probably has more of an effect on the Jays chances of making the playoffs is the Angels' signing of Ohtani, which likely makes them a better candidate for a wild-card spot.

I'm just glad the Cardinals didn't get him. He makes too much money, has too much control over his contract and he's injury-prone. And we'd have had to have given up too many prospects. Now we can use that money to fill multiple holes. A couple rumors going around here are that the Cards are interested in either Arrieta or Darvish. I'd take either one of those guys. There's also speculation about JD Martinez and Manny Machado.

I watched the press conference announcing that Alan Trammel and Jack Morris have been elected to the HoF by the veteran's committee. Morris was very emotional when answering questions, choking up a lot. It seemed odd because I've always thought of him as this imposing, hardass, intimidating pitcher; sort of like Bob Gibson. But he was very moved at the thought of finally getting into the HoF.

I agree. That contract is going to be one giant millstone near the end, much like the Rodriguez and Pujols contracts.

Martinez is represented by BoorAss and will one way too much money and length of contract. Machado has only one year left before he becomes a free agent. He's not quite as good as Donaldson, who also has only one year left, but is five years younger. If you could make a trade for Machado and sign a contract extension, you'd be set at third base for years.

I think Machado's pending free agency is why the trade talks started. The O's already know they're not going to be able to keep him after next year so they might as well see what teams offer for him now.

The same debate goes on regarding Donaldson. He supposedly wants to stay, and the Jays don't want to get rid of him, but I'll bet they flip him like a pancake if they are out of it completely before the deadline.

There are some very high profile free agents coming next winter, including Donaldson, Machado, Kershaw, and Harper

Yeah if you don't think you're going to be able to sign a guy it makes sense to flip him early if you can get something decent for him

I read that the Orioles don't believe they will sign Machado and are shopping him.

They are. And MLB Network is reporting that the Cardinals are one of the teams talking to the O's because they're one of the very limited few who have what Baltimore wants, young starting pitchers under team control for a few years and they have the resources to pay Machado.

MLB Network is also reporting the Cardinals are in serious talks with Miami about outfielder Marcel Ozuna.

The Jays are supposedly looking at Ozuna as well. We'll take him, you take Machado. Sounds good?

We want both!

Apparently because of the new Fox Sports TV deal the Cardinals are flush with money.

And we have young, team-controlled starting pitching prospects which everyone wants.  That's why they're in the Machado talks.  I just hope we don't mortgage the farm for one player.  That's why I'm glad they lost the Stanton Sweepstakes.

The Jays need a middle of the order corner outfielder with power. They have lots of outfield prospects and good, young bullpen arms to deal from.

We could see a deal then. The Cardinals need middle relief and have a surplus of outfielders.

Yeah MLB Network reports that it's a done deal but no terms are known yet.
