I didn't realize he went all the way back down to A ball to reinvent himself.

Look at his social media posts in this Yahoo article. He obviously really loved flying.

Yeah, he had to go all the way back to A ball after a solid rookie session.
Almost every interview I've watched talks about how great a family man he was, and how he considered his family in every contact decision.

Here's a great article about how dominant he was.

Do you think the Cards will go after Stanton?

They're rumored to be one of the teams heavily interested in him but Stanton apparently wants to play on the West coast If the Cardinals put in an offer on him it better either include a lot of money from Miami to pay the contract or lesser minor league guys in return. We can't be paying his ungodly salary AND mortgage the minor league farm at the same time. Pick one or the other. Supposedly Miami would prefer to deal with St. Louis because we have a wealth of top minor league pitching prospects and pitching is something the Marlins desperately need. But if that's the case then Miami better be picking up something like $50M of Stanton's contract.

Huh. At least the Cardinals got one award this year. Adam Wainwright won the "Silver Slugger" award for his 2 HR and .262 average.

I don't think anyone is worth the money Stanton has on his contract. You can fill A LOT of roster holes with what he makes.

That's pretty much where I am on the situation too.

The Cardinals need a big bat but not at that price. And now they also need a closer since they cut Blowitall loose.

There are a few good setup men and closers on the market. And I'm sure a good impact bat, or maybe even two, can be found for the same price or less.

I see Carlos Beltran retired today.

Alex Anthopoulos is supposed to be named the new GM of the Atlanta Braves.

I was just going to post that about Anthopoulos. I think that's a great hire for the Braves. They already have a wealth of young talent and I thought he did a good job in Toronto. Look out for the Braves in 2 or 3 years.

And he comes to Atlanta from the Dodgers who put a lot of emphasis on the new analytics so he's really well-rounded. As I said, a great hire for the Braves.

It's funny, I hated the Braves for a long, long time because of their dominance and the fact that Ted Turner's network insisted on touting them as "America's Team". But now I kind of like them. They're building a new team the right way; smart draft picks plus smart trades. And they have a franchise player to build around in Freddy Freeman.

Look out 2019 or 2020; they're going to be the Astros if they get some pitching help.

There hasn't been a lot of rumors lately, other than the rehashed ones like "Hey, the Cards are interested in Donaldson". There was a lot more early action last year.

The debate of the day on MLB Network today has been about Carlos Beltran.

A) Is he a Hall of Famer?
B) In on the first ballot?
C) Possible manager candidate somewhere?
D) If he's in, what team's hat does he wear?

He's already indicated he would like to continue his baseball career and he's bi-lingual and has mentored a lot of players around the league.

I think he's in the HoF but probably not on the first ballot. He's one of those guys who ran up impressive career numbers because he hung around for 20 years.

And if he wants to be a manager I think he should go for it. He's mentored players everywhere he's been.

I'm not sure about the hat one.

Various MLB Network shows talked about the free agent/trade market and all the BBWA guys they talked to have the Cardinal interested in practically everyone. Giancarlo Stanton, JD Martinez, Jake Arrieta, Wade Davis... yep, Cards mentioned in all of them

A) Most likely
B) No, shouldn't be
C) He should start coaching somewhere, if he wants
D) I think he had his best years with the Royals at and Mets

There are a lot of teams interested in those players. I think it comes across as more "obvious" than it does actual news or rumors.

True, but the Cardinals have something everyone else wants: major league-ready young pitching prospects. We've got a bunch. That's why a lot of people think the Marlins want to deal Stanton to St. Louis. Except Stanton wants to play on the west coast and has a full no-trade clause.

And if we fork over some good young pitching then the Marlins better be picking up a bunch of Stanton's remaining contract.

I was all for getting JD Martinez until he came out seeking 10yrs @ $200M.

I say don't sign ANY contract for more than 5 or 6 years. 10? No way.

If they are looking for dealing with the Jays, they would have to give up position players more than pitching prospects. I still don't think the Jays will deal Donaldson unless they get absolutely blown away by an offer.

He's a Boar Ass client. That's all that needs to be said about that.

Boar-ass may be a dick but he's smart.  You know what he's doing with asking that for Martinez?  Setting the table for next year when Bryce Harper is a FA.  If Martinez lands what he's asking for can you imagine what Harper will get?

If I was a great MLB player I'd try like hell to get Boras as my agent. That guy is a first class A-hole but he sure does get a lot of money for his clients and therefore himself.

Smart and greedy.  I don't think the Jays have signed Boar-Ass client since the mid-90s. They've had a beef with him since then.

Last off-season, Aaron Sanchez switched to Boar-Ass, so I'm not sure what's going to happen with that.

Sportsnet is going to be a broadcasting the celebration of life for Roy Halladay today. There are a ton of former players, managers, and more attending and speaking there. Of course Chris Carpenter to be there and will be speaking, I believe.
