Did you see the Nats hit 8 homers in the first four innings yesterday? At one point they hit 4 in a row.

I was watching that game and I discovered that Daniel Murphy's "walkup song" is "Prisoner's Song" by Dropkick Murphys.

They hit 5 in one inning. That's just crazy. I love all the weird things that happen in baseball.

They both have Murphy in the name.

Cool

BTW, Cardinals lost last night 4-0 to the Dbacks.

They started AAA pitcher Luke Weaver in place o Wainwright who is on the 10 day DL with back spasms.  Weaver started some last year and has been lights out in AAA this year but he made one big mistake last night when he gave up a grand slam to JD Martinez.  Not that it would have mattered anyway since the Cardinal offense only managed to get 5 hits.

We had a shot at getting to .500 last night for the first time since May so of course I could have marked that down as an automatic loss.

And Sea Serpent strikes again.

The Cardinals had a 1-0 lead starting the top of the 8th.  Matheny started the inning with Cecil who promptly walked the first batter he faced then allowed a double.  Fortunately the Cardinal outfield was able to hold the runner at third but Sea Serpent is gone after allowing both runners he faced to get into scoring position.

Now Blowsitall is in.  2nd and 3rd no outs for AZ.

I was hoping the Jays would do something interesting while I was away, but they kind of treaded water. Seeing as they traded Liriano away and Sanchez is still on the DL, they now have two starters named X and Y in the starting rotation.

Yesterday, X, some scrub they pulled out of the waiver dumpster, started and it went as you would expect. They followed that up with some other guy I have never heard of making his first major-league appearance, which turned the game into a washout. The Yankees won 11-5.

I assume by now you've heard of "Rally Cat"?

The little cat that ran on the field last night with the Cardinals trailing 5-4 and the bases loaded, two out.  After the delay Molina homered on the very first pitch giving the Cards their 5th win in a row and moving them to only a game and a half out of first.

The Jays beat the Yankees 4-0 last night to take 2 out of 3 for this series. Stroman starts against Pittsburgh tonight.

In the usual Blue Jays news, Tulowitzki what is done for the season with an ankle injury. And the guy they brought up for his first major league appearance out of the bullpen hit the DL after that one appearance. He took a liner off the foot night.

You guys can't get a break on the injury front.

Cards won 8-6 last night on the strength of Dexter Fowler's grand slam.  6 wins in a row and only a game out of first place.  I hate when they get my hopes up.  Even if the Cards somehow managed to win the division AND get past the first wild card game, the only team in the NL that I see as having a shot against the Dodgers in Washington.  The Dodgers are a freakin' juggernaut!  Especially now that they have Yu Darvish in the starting rotation.

Cards tried to blow it last night but hung on 8-5. Guess who the guilty party was.  Yup, my buddy the Sea Serpent.  2/3 IP, 3H, 1BB and 4 ER.

Wow, the Jays' pen is as bad as ours'.

I just watched them blow a 5-3 10th inning lead to the Cubs who wrapped up the sweep. That looked a lot like something we do on a nightly basis.

Fined for speaking the truth? It's time for MLB to admit that some of their umpires are just crap.

And you should have seen that play that got Matheny tossed (referenced in that Roast). The Cardinal reliever kept looking back at the runner on second and wouldn't throw the ball. Suddenly the umpire signaled timeout. EXCEPT that NO PLAYER called time. When Matheny went out to find out what was going on, the umpire said he needed a break so he called timeout himself. That's when Matheny went ballistic.

Wow, no kidding… No wonder he came out and questioned it. There have been so many examples over the last couple years that I can remember of umpires just thinking that they are bigger than the game. I don't know why MLB doesn't get it.

I think that guy in the Roast piece makes a very valid point:  umpires don't have to face microphones after a game while players do.  Why is that?  He also made a great point when he said that if a player says something about an ump well, so what; it's not going to impact the game.  But if an umpire says something about a player that completely compromises his objectivity whenever he has to call anything involving that player.  So objecting to players criticizing umps while umps can't criticize players is a total straw man.

That said, I do agree that the suspension of Joe West was ridiculous.  If MLB wanted to suspend him for being an attention-seeking ump who sucks that's one thing.  But suspending him for an obviously tongue-in-cheek remark regarding Beltre which even Beltre said was a joke is pathetic.

BTW, did you happen to catch any of the inaugural Little League World Series Classic last night?

So cool. Both the Cardinals and Pirates flew from Pittsburgh to a tiny little airport in Williamsport, PA where the LLWS is being played. The teams were met at the airport by the Little League teams in full uniform. The entire day Sunday featured the MLB players interacting with the Little Leaguers. The game itself was held at the second oldest stadium in the US that normally features professional baseball. It only seats 2500. The crack of the bat against the ball during last night's game was SO loud!

The coolest part was the features ESPN showed of the interaction between the MLB players and the LL players. They showed Kolten Wong sitting on the team bus talking to some kids, Yadier Molina sitting down with some LL catchers. And the Pirates first baseman was running around trying to get the autographs of all the LL players. I actually think the MLB players had at least as much fun as the Little League players.

Just a really cool event. MLB spent over a million dollars to bring that stadium up to MLB standards in hopes that this becomes an annual event. I really hope it does because it seemed like a whole lot of fun for both the big league players and the kids.

I really didn't see anything about it. The only thing I saw it related to the Little League World Series was the catch that the center fielder made while going over the wall.

That is pretty cool that some of the MLB players spent the day with the little leaguers. How cool would that be for the kids?

What was really neat was how much fun the big leaguers were having hanging around with the kids. It was obvious both MLB teams really had a blast. Cardinals outfielder Tommy Pham took in one of the LL games during the day and bought all the kids in his section sno-cones, all 200+ of them. It reminded me of how parents with kids must feel on Christmas morning; watching the kids reminds you of when you were that age.

What's worse is that these latest umpires are relative "newbies". We're not talking Joe West or Angel Hernandez here. At least I've heard of Chad Fairchild but I never had an opinion of him before. The guy who arbitrarily called timeout and then tossed Matheny I've NEVER even heard of before.

It's bad when this "umpire sensitivity" thing is becoming an epidemic.
