The Jays managed to beat Boston 8-6. Even a blind squirrel finds an acorn now and then.

You're right, our teams suck this year.

The Cardinals are now in 4th place in the NL Central.  At least if the Cardinals are planning on trying to trade Lance Lynn before the end of the year his price is going up.  In his last 3 starts Lynn has pitched a total of 19 1/3 innings and allowed only 1 earned run while fanning 10.  He went 6 today and allowed 1 run on 3 hits.

A contending team looking for a middle-to-back of the rotation starter rental could do a lot worse than Lance Lynn.  He's a free agent after this season and with all the pitching prospects the Cardinals have in the minors it's almost a sure thing they won't re-sign him and since they're basically out of it they'd probably take a couple of high-grade prospects in a trade.

Rumors keep having him going to Colorado because he has a career ERA of around 3 there and very few pitchers can say that.

I think both of our teams are in a situation where they have a solid core, but have pending free agents and pieces they can move for some decent prospects.

Hahahaha.

Yesterday Michael Phelps was on MLB Central. He's a big fantasy baseball player so he asked the "crack" MLB Central research team for a tip. They gave him Michael Fulmer.

So today they opened the show replaying that discussion but splicing in how Fulmer did. Two and a third innings, eight runs; shortest start of Fulmer's career. Now they're calling the research team "the scourge of the swimming world".

LOL. I saw that he got lit up yesterday. That certainly didn't happen last week when he pitched against the Jays.

Ouch. They just reviewed the Cardinals/Mets game.

The Cardinals are now 3-8 in games that were tied after 8 innings. If that doesn't tell you our pen sucks, nothing does.

That IS bad. At least the Jays' bullpen is pretty strong.

The last few years we've been able to say that if we combined the Jays and Cards we'd have a dominant team. You can't say that this year. The Jays offense is bad, the starting pitching is inconsistent at best, and the defense is a mixed bag. The only thing decent is the bullpen.

Looks like the Cardinals have started selling.

Today they traded pitcher Marco Gonzales to Seattle for minor league outfield Tyler O'neill. O'neill is rated the #29 prospect overall in the minors so that sure looks like a "building for the future trade".

At first glance, that sounds like a pretty good score. Coincidentally, I was listening to a Jays podcast this morning where they were suggesting the Jays should trade for him.

EDIT: He's also Canadian.

I'm watching the Cardinals vs Cubs. It's 3-2 Cubs in the 8th and both starters are out. Cardinal announcers said when it's a battle of the bullpens most teams will have a huge advantage because Cardinal relievers are a combined 8-19. I was wondering about that. So the Cards have 49 losses and almost 40% are from the bullpen.

Yeah I think it's a good deal. The Cardinals were out of options with Gonzales anyway next year. He had to stay on the major league roster or any other team could claim him. And we need outfield help; I'm not convinced either Piscotty or especially Grichuk are long-term answers in the outfield.

Considering they went out and spent money on the bullpen in the off-season, that's disappointing.

I just checked and Blowsitall has 4 of those and Oh (no) has 5. Both are free agents after this year and I say let 'em walk.

Wow, the Cubs pen just walked in the tying run.  Carpenter led of the 8th with a double followed by 3 consecutive walks.  Still no one out.

Now it's 5-3 after a ground rule double by DeJong.  And the Cubs pitcher promptly walked the next guy.  So after Arietta didn't walk anyone in 6 innings, the Cub pen has now walked 5; four in this inning.  6-3 now after a broken bat single.  Still bases loaded and no one out.

I'd swear the Cardinal bullpen is wearing Cubs uniforms now.  This sure looks like stuff our bullpen does.

Now it's 8-3 after another double.  And surprise, surprise the Cubs reliever walked the next guy.  So far it's 3 doubles, a single and 5 walks this inning.  Still bases loaded with no outs.  Talk about a bullpen implosion...

And before I could hit send, Carpenter singled (his second hit this inning) and it's 9-3.

Cubs fans are justifiably starting to boo.

Here's a list of the most untradable contracts. The Jays' Tulowitzki is on there. If you ask me, the Albert Pujols contract is the most untradable.

Tommy Pham with a 2 run single.  11-3.  9 runs in so far this inning.

Is John Maddon bursting at the seams yet?

How is Giancarlo Stanton not on that list?  He's still got 10 years/$295M left on his contract.  How many teams can afford that?

And a mock cheer goes up as the inning is finally over.  Nine runs is the most runs the Cardinals have ever scored in an inning at Wrigley.

I'm glad I was away this weekend and missed the Jays getting swept and outscored 31-3 by the Indians. In fact, I could probably miss the remainder of the season and not miss anything good.

The Jays are 10 games out of 1st, 2nd-last place in the AL. Pretty much everything that could go wrong has. Sanchez is back on the DL with blister issues for the 4th time. The only consistent starter is Stroman, and he fought through a blister issue on Saturday (7.2 IP, 1 ER).

Unfortunately, the "trade chips" the Jays have are all pitching or hitting terribly. Estrada and Liriano have been dumpster fires lately. Joe Smith just got back off the DL. Bautista looks lost at the plate. Barney hits like the purple dinosaur, not a baseball player. Who would want these guys?

Any starting pitcher not named Stroman can't pitch and any position player not named Smoak can't hit lately.

Yeah that about sums up the Cardinals weekend too after the 9 run explosion Friday night.  Bullpen blows it's 20th game Saturday and then Wacha serves up a game-winning homer after the Cardinals fought back to tie it up.

Ugh, this whole season has sucked for our teams.  At least I see one ex-Cardinal got a break today.  The Braves traded Jaime Garcia to the Twins who are only a couple games behind the Indians.  Good for him.  I hope he, Matt Adams and Holliday continue to do well.  Time for us to start selling some of these pieces for prospects.  Randal Grichuk has homered in 3 straight games now since he's come back off the DL after coming back from the minors.  Trade his sorry ass while we can get a decent double A prospect maybe.  Same thing with Aledmys Diaz; Paul DeJong (our new shortstop) hit his 12 homer last night in about 150 at bats.  I say trade Stephen Piscotty too.  And see what we can get for Blowsitall and Oh(no) too since they're FAs after this season anyway.  I say go into full REBUILD MODE.

Of course that will never happen because Cardinal management never wants to admit they're "rebuilding".

Maybe I'll see Garcia in September when I go to watch the Jays play in Minneapolis.

I really didn't like how the Jays approached this off-season. I figured I was just sour because they didn't re-sign Encarnacion, so I was willing to give them a chance. Unfortunately, all they got was older and slower. Last year they had the best starting pitching in the AL to make up for some of the deficiencies. This year, every starting pitcher not named Stroman has hit the DL at least once. When they haven't been on the DL, they've been inconsistent. If you don't have excellent starting pitching or excellent hitting, you are really not going to go far.

I think Toronto is in the same situation as St. Louis; the fans will not put up with a "rebuild". Ownership certainly doesn't want to come across as that, because they see that attendance has skyrocketed to last two seasons. If they go into "rebuild mode", they lose all that goodwill and attendance.

Watching the Rockies at St. Louis and the Cards are up 6-0 after 7.  They've hit 3 more homers tonight.

How's this for a weird stat:

The Cardinals lead the league with 7 players with at least 10 homers but they are also the only team in the league that has NO player with at least 15 homers.

Wow.

MLB Central just showed footage of Bartolo Colon pitching to Clay Bellinger in 2000 followed by footage of Bartolo Colon pitching to Cody Bellinger from last night. And that's not the only father/son duo he's pitched to.
