I'll take Joe West over Angel Hernandez any game.

This should squash that lawsuit before it even gets started:

Quote :
Since 2002 (since that's as far back as I cared to research) Angel Hernandez has had 2 world series assignments (02 and 05) and has been the ONLY umpire of Cuban descent assigned to the WS in that time. Alfonso Marquez (Mexican) appears to be the only other non American assigned to the WS in the last 15 years.
So: 1) you can't claim discrimination when you've been getting your shots, and 2) you haven't been invited back in 12 years so clearly you're just not that good. Also: Bob Davidson has been umpiring longer and hasn't been promoted yet either.

What do you think of Stroman's comments about blisters?

I'd say it's back to the ball again. Just like the reason for so many bombs if the ball is wound tighter then the seams are going to be tighter. Tighter seams means the pitcher has to dig his fingers in more than he used to which to me means the possibility of blisters. I know Rich Hill of the Dodgers has been plagued with blisters repeatedly the last couple seasons. It seems like one you develop one it's likely to recur in the future.

MLB Network's coverage of the Mets/Nats game is coming on. Already?!?!?!? It's 10 am here. Granted it's 11 am on the east coast but that still seems like an awfully early start time.

I think that's what he's saying is that it's the new ball that's causing more blisters this year.

Usually they are around 1:00 pm. It's pretty rare to have an earlier start.

He must have said that in the video because I couldn't get that to play and I didn't see any mention of it in the article.

Well Lance Lynn was cruising along into the 6th today with a 2-0 lead but then he gave up a 3 run homer and walked the next guy so Matheny pulled him. In came the gasoline bullpen and by the time the inning was over it was 5-2 Marlins and that was the final score.

The Jays actually won a game, 4-1. The only reason they won is that J.A. Happ pitched great and the Yankees let them score some runs. Otherwise the offense didn't do much again.

I found another link to that Stroman story. I think you should be able to watch the interview here.

Them and a whole bunch of other teams are interested in a bunch of Jays players because they figure they will be sellers. At this point, I can't see why the Jays would part with him or any of their core.

Montero is in the lineup this afternoon. The Jays' previous backup catcher went on the DL and now require surgery to repair a meniscus in the knee. I guess that's why they needed to sign a catcher.

Despite Estrada blowing a 5-0 lead and the Jays trailing 5-6 before he left, the bullpen dominated the Yankees and the offense chipped in just enough for them to win 7-6. Osuna came in to convert his 20th save in a row. They said that Osuna has never given up a run in Yankee Stadium over his three years in the majors.

The prize for taking 2 of 3 from the Yankees is that they go to Houston to face the best team in the majors.

Yeah Houston is a friggin' juggernaut.

Since the Cardinals are essentially out of it the 'stros are my team to root for this year (sorry). They built this team the right way, have a cool manager and excel in all aspects of the game. What's not to like?

MLB Central just had a sportswriter on who had a good idea. You know some of these rules MLB is considering to speed up the game? Stuff like starting with a runner on second base in extra innings or a pitch clock? Why not implement them in the All Star Game as a trial run? See what the players, coaches and fans think. Especially now that the ASG is simply back to being an exhibition.

I loathe most of those rule changes. Just abandon them altogether, IMO.

Today I watched the Cardinals gain a split in the series with the Marlins. During the game the announcers dropped this tidbit that you could probably win a lot of bar bets with:

What team leads MLB in salary for longterm contracts?

Yup, the Marlins. They are currently in debt for over $500M in longterm contracts. For example, right now they are not only paying their current manager but also paying 2 former managers. No wonder the team is for sale and no one is buying. They need to shed some of that overhead before anyone will buy the team.

The Marlins are a perennially poorly run team.

The Cardinals may have found a diamond in the rough.

The kid playing first base for us, Luke Voit, looks like a monster. So far in 10 games and 27 ABs he's hitting .333 with 2 HR and 7 RBI and 6 runs scored. Today he hit a 450ft homer and a double to drive in 3 of the 4 runs. To make room for Voit the Cardinals have actually started playing Carpenter back at 2nd base where he started which doesn't bode well for Kolton Wong when he comes off the DL. I've been saying trade that guy for years anyway.

And 6 of those game were against Arizona and Washington so it's not like Voit was facing weak pitching. Matheny said the other night against Max Scherzer he thought Voit had the best swings of anyone on the team. This guy wasn't even a spring training invitee; he was on no one's radar at the start of the season.

You've still got to be wary of that because of the small sample size. Hopefully he works out because it's always a good story when someone comes out of nowhere like that.

The Jays managed to split the series with Houston. That sounds well and fine except for the fact they got absolutely destroyed in the two games they lost, 12-2 and 19-1. I really don't see the Jays going anywhere this year, despite the occasional glimmers of hope. I'm hoping they can sell any of the non-essential core players at the trade deadline and get back some decent prospects or something of value. Without doing something like that, all we get next year is an older and slower team than this year.

On a different note, check out the movement on this slider by Stroman. This is just filthy.

We've got another kid tearing it up too. Paul DeJong has played 2nd base when Wong went on the DL and now short with Diaz being sent to the minors. In 128 at bats he's hitting .315 with 9 HR and 20 RBI. Also 14 runs scored. I say screw this season and play all the kids. Bring up some kid pitchers too. Let's see what we've got that we want to keep and what we want to use as trade bait.

I'm with you about this season. It's amazing how the Jays have gotten so old and slow. Remember two years ago when the Jays were pummeling every team into oblivion? They now have the American League's second-worst offense.

The Cards are in a much better position to bring up young players. The problem for the Jays is that they really don't have anyone who can come up to step in. Top outfield prospects Pompey and Alford are injured. Their top pitching prospects are in AA and certainly not ready. They have a good first base and a good catching prospect, but neither of those are in need at the moment.

I was reading today that Roberto Osuna has faced Aaron Judge 4 times and struck him out all 4. Here are Judge's comments:

I can attest for why hes an all-star, Judge told Postmedia on Monday at Marlins Park prior to the home-run Derby. Hes got the stuff. Hes got the makeup. Hes a competitor. He goes out there and competes. Hes going to give you what hes got and lay it on the line.

See that's why I like Judge even though he's a Yankee. He usually just answers questions honestly; he hasn't let learned how to be a cocky, arrogant MLB player.
