Yeah that was a definite bomb.  Gregorius' reaction in the dugout is hilarious.  Even he looks like "Are you kidding me?"

The Jays managed to take 2 of 3 from the Mariners on the weekend. Any time the Jays visit Seattle, it's more like a home game. On the broadcast, you can see a sea of blue and here the chance "Let's go Blue Jays". It must really piss off the Seattle fans.

All three games featured good starts (Biagini, Stroman, and J.A. Happ). All games were close, 2-4, 4-2, and 4-0. As per usual, the Jays scored most of their runs off home runs. In the 4-2 game on Saturday, they only had 4 hits. Fortunately, 3 of them were home runs.

Here's a heads-up play from the Saturday game. There's an extended video of it on the Sportsnet site, but you never seem to be able to see the videos on there. The extended videos shows the complete reaction from the coach, which is pretty hilarious.

Wow.  I've never seen that before.

Not since Little League

BTW, I actually like Aaron Judge in spite of everything.  Despite the fact that he's a Yankee, despite the fact that the Yankee fans have really gone overboard with the whole "Judge" thing and despite all the hype, have you ever heard/seen an interview with the guy?  He's all about "the team" and he's about as humble as a kid his age enjoying all the success he is could possibly be.  At least publicly he doesn't seem to have a cocky bone in his body which given he's playing for the Yankees is quite an achievement in my book.

On MLB Central today DeRosa called him a blend of Derek Jeter and Michael Strahan.  He's sort of got the face of Jeter but he has the size and even a little of the middle teeth gap that Strahan has.  They did a photo merge of the two and it was almost perfect.

I don't know too much about the Judge, but my son mentioned that he saw/read some things about him and said he seemed to be a decent guy.

BTW the Cards swept the Phillies over the weekend.  Yesterday Wainwright just didn't have it but after giving up a run in the first and the second he shut them down through the 5th.  And the bullpen was pretty good until Oh tried to blow the save in the 9th.  Cards entered the 9th with a 6-3 lead and ended up winning 6-5.

Amazing what a close game with no Fatboy and no Sea Serpent can turn into.

The good news is that even with a record that's 3 games under .500, the Cards are in such a weak division that that record has them only 2.5 games out of first.  The bad news is that with as well as the NL West is playing, the only way to make the post-season in the NL Central is to win the division.

It's amazing how fast that changed.  Just a couple years ago the NL Central sent 3 teams to the post-season.  Sure ain't happening this year.  The NL West is brutal.

Yeah, it sure has changed. In the AL, the Houston Astros are the best team. Nobody would have considered that a few years ago.

I like the Astros, in spite of the whole "spygate" thing with the Cardinals.  They built their team the right way; smart draft picks and smart trades for veterans and prospects.   If they have the balls to go get another starter before the deadline, look out.  I think that's the one thing they're missing.

If the Jays totally flame out by then, Estrada, Happ, or Liriano could be available.

Speaking of development, the Yankees have actually developed players over the last few years instead of going out and buying them. That makes them even more dangerous.

In the first round, 22nd pick, the Jays drafted Logan Warmoth out of the University of North Carolina. He's supposedly a great hitting shortstop with reasonable defensive capabilities.

For their second pick (28th) in the first round (compensation for losing Edwin), they took RHP Nate Pearson out of Florida State. The guy is 6'6" and has hit 102 mph in the bullpen. Supposedly he doesn't have great secondary pitches, so he might end up in the bullpen.

For their third pick (61st), they took Hagen Danner, a California high school catcher/RHP. He's supposedly more of a "bat-first catcher". He also throws mid-90s on the radar gun.

On MLB Central today DeRosa is crediting Matt Holliday for Aaron Judge's development as a hitter. He struck out a ton last year when he was called up and DeRosa says Holliday has been working with him on cutting them down.

Holliday has been a steal for the Yankees. He's batting .280 with 13 HR and 44 RBI. Plus the leadership he provides.

Cards shutout the Brewers in the first game of a split DH 6-0.  That's 4 wins in a row.  Still two games under .500 but as of this minute only 1.5 games out of first in the pathetic NL Central.

The Cardinal announcers just dropped this stat tonight because the STL starter Marco Gonzalez had his path to the majors derailed by Tommy John surgery.

"26% of major league pitchers have had TJ surgery."

26%????  That's more than one out of every four MLB pitchers.  I find that mind-boggling.

Think about it.  Most teams carry around 10-12 pitchers.  That means the odds are good that at least one and probably two pitchers on every MLB team have had Tommy John surgery.

Even scarier is that the announcers said kids as young as 15 are having it now.  Holy crap!  I'd tell my kid to learn another position.

That is crazy. You know what's even crazier? I have read about kids having it even when they don't need it, so they won't (hopefully) need it later!

Devon Travis had knee surgery yesterday and will be out "a while". That's not great news. While Brian Goins and Darwin Barney provide excellent defense, they are usually rally killers at bat.

Another one I'm worried about is Estrada. He's lost his last three games and has not looked sharp. The first half of the season so far, he pitched to an ERA under 2.50. Since then, his ERA is over 5.50.

Great… Carrera is now on the DL with a right foot fracture. I think the Jays are made out of porcelain this year.

I hadn't heard of that. That's complete BS. Umpires are not to interfere with the game whatsoever. As long as it's a reasonable request from a player to move out of their line of sight, they should completely comply without question.

Here's a stat for you. Barring catastrophe, Osuna should destroy the record for saves before age 24.

Cards blew another one in late innings last night.  Oh served up a 2-run shot to Eric Thames in the 9th to hand the Brewers a 6-4 win.

If the Cards would have just won HALF of the games they've thrown away in the 7th, 8th and 9th innings they'd be light years ahead of everyone in the division.  At least now it's not just one guy; Wednesday night it was Rosenthal/Blowsitall blowing another lead in the 8th.  If it's not Oh or Rosenthal then it's Siegrist in the 7th.  And that's not even mentioning all the games Fatboy and Sea Serpent have tossed away this season. On a side note, Sea Serpent hasn't pitched in at least a week so apparently Matheny agrees with me.  Only bring him in when the score is way out of hand.

I think our pen is a bigger dumpster fire than the Jays' pen was.  It's just horrible; I don't have faith in anyone down there.

EDIT: I just checked, Cecil hasn't pitched since that June 7th game I was raving about a page back so yeah, it's been 9 days.

Tonight it's the Cardinals against an AL team I think some people refer to as the "Trash Birds".

UPDATE: 10-1 Cardinals in the 7th.   They've been blasting the ball for once.  Four homeruns.

UPDATE2:  Hahahahahaha!  Guess who the Cardinals are bringing in with the 10-1 lead?

"Get in there Cecil!  Even you can't screw this up!"

And now in addition to shaving his head he's also changed his number.  At least he knows he sucks; he's trying everything to change his luck.

And The Serpent throws a scoreless inning.  I guess now we know the kind of situations to bring him in.  But that's a lot of money to pay for a "mop-up man".

You obviously pissed off the Trash Birds because the rest of the weekend didn't go as well. Maybe Cecil should've pitched more? Or did he give up a bunch of the runs? I was in Grand Forks North Dakota with my son for a baseball tournament the weekend.

Yeah that Reds play was hilarious!

Freakin' Cards pitching sucked against the O's. We scored 23 runs in 3 games, hit 11 homers and still dropped 2 out of 3. Cecil managed to pitch 2 scoreless innings during the series. Actually the bullpen wasn't horrendous for the most part but the starting pitching sure was.

You shouldn't lose a series when the offense shows up like that! Over 7 runs per game and almost 4 homers should do the trick!

The Jays bats were pretty silent expect for Sunday. Starting pitching and bullpen were good Saturday and Sunday, but Biagini blew up big time in the Friday game. He managed to give up 8 runs while only going 1+ innings! You could tell he just did not have it even in the warm-up; he bounced a couple of his warm-up throws. Even on a play he made, he air mailed a throw to first and chucked it darn near into the stands.

EDIT: Oh, and I miss playing the Reds.

The Jays are on the road for a 4-game series against the 2015 and 2016 ALDS runners-up. The Jays always do well against them. I'm hoping the bats will wake up because the Rangers' pitching staff has been good hitting lately.
