PostSubject: Vacation   Fri Feb 10, 2017 1:32 pm

My wife and I are heading away to Belize for vacation. We leave Saturday morning and are back on the 22nd. We are really looking forward to the break. I'm hoping it will help me with the anxiety/depression I've been dealing with the last couple weeks.

Have fun OBF!

I always think of college when I hear "Belize". I knew a guy from there. I think I told the story here before. He's the guy who would holler at me across the campus quad "Hey Steeeeeex!!!!"

We had a great trip! We did some fishing, snorkeling, hiking, and saw many great things. We spent three nights in San Pedro on Ambergris Caye, then went to the mainland where we rented a vehicle and drove down to Punta Gorda for three nights, and then to Hopkins for three nights. Driving around Belize is easy; there are no traffic lights in the whole country. There are no traffic jams, no trains, speed limits are just suggestions, and I never heard a single horn honk.

It is a great place. Not too many people go there. I'll post some pics when I get caught up on some things.

Better late than never...

Water taxi from Belize City to San Pedro

Snorkeling with sharks, rays, and turtles in the Hol Chan Marine Reserve, off the coast of Ambergris Caye

Tubing along a river in southern Belize

A local fisherman casting his net

Some smaller waterfalls we hiked to

Beautiful, clear water

Hiking up to a cave with a Mayan guide

Inside the cave

Conch fishermen

I think it's one of those things you have to know how to cook properly. If you don't it's rubbery or chewy.

You swam in a river in Belize?

No way! Don't South American rivers have that parasite with an affinity for the male member?

I've never heard of anything like that. Then again, Belize is in Central America. I don't know too much about the places in South America.

We've always swam in the mountain rivers.

I looked it up.  It's the candiru fish.  And apparently the whole "swims up your urethra" myth is an urban legend.  And the don't live in Belize anyway.

But I'd still never set foot in a river there.  Who knows what other beasties, visible or microscopic might be lurking in that water.

Depends on where you are swimming. There are some areas where I definitely wouldn't, such as where there might be crocodiles, but there are no problems where the rivers come out of the mountains.

To a lesser extent. Conch is basically a large muscle, and if you don't pound the crap out of it, it has the texture of an eraser.

Snorkeling with the sharks was very cool. It's neat being in the water and having 6 to 10-foot sharks swimming right by you. We also saw many other types of colorful fish.

I would snorkel with sharks as long as they were not too dangerous. I have snorkeled with sting rays and turtles and dolpfins but not sharks.

They were nurse sharks, so no danger.
