Sideburn - Eight

This album is typical Sideburn; not the least bit original and very much in the AC/DC mode which of course puts it right in my wheelhouse.

I love the Nightwish version of that song. Or at least I did; I haven't heard it in ages.

I've been pulling together a personal Jethro Tull comp.  The band that first got me into "the Celtic sound" with songs like this:

I knew this was going to be a big task so I waited until I had a ton of time off due to having to use-or-lose vacation days so I decided now was the time.  After listening to all the Tull music I have I still think my favorites are "Heavy Horses", "Songs From The Wood", "Aqualung" and "Minstrel In The Gallery".

This was definitely my "gateway band" to the wonders of Celtic music.

I think one of the coolest aspects of music like this is that it's timeless. This song is 40 years old but it could be 200 years old or written yesterday.

Great song.

Your last sentence is bang on.

I really enjoy a lot of Jethro Tull. I have a couple of their albums, but nowhere near the amount that they have. Now that you've got in the mood for them, I'm going to spin one of their compilation discs I have.

Cool

If you don't want to round up all the Tull albums (I certainly don't have them all), this comp is a great one to have:

But I'd highly recommend acquiring Minstrel In The Gallery, Aqualung, Songs From The Wood and Heavy Horses.  I also really love the often-overlooked Catfish Rising.

After reviewing all the Tull I have in The Vault, those are the ones I consider essential.

Oh, and if you can pick up any of the Steven Wilson remixes for "cheap" they are definitely worth it.  The guy is a member of the prog band Porcupine Tree and an avid Tull fan so his remixes are a labor of love.  I can hear the difference even on my car stereo.  I have the Minstrel In The Gallery and the Aqualung versions and they're both like listening to a new Tull album.  But these remixes are also real expensive.  I have the 2003 generic remixes of Heavy Horses and Songs From The Wood and while they definitely sound better than the original CDs of those albums, they don't sound as good as the Wilson remixes I have.  But I decided they were good enough. If I had high end stereo equipment though I'd definitely have bought the Wilson remixes of those albums too.

I'll check that one out on Deezer right away.

I have Aqualung. My favorite from it is Locomotive Breath, followed by Aqualung. I also have a comp called 20 Years of Jethro Tull. It's got some interesting songs/versions of songs on it that might not be on other albums.

Checking out the Catfish Rising album now. It has a fish in the title, so I had to.

Laughing

I like that one a lot.  It's sort of a return to the Heavy Horses/Songs From The Wood days.  There are quite a few tracks with a Celtic-y riff to them.  Thinking Round Corners and When Jesus Came To Play for example.

I just listened to the song Thinking Round Corners, and I see that you mean.

So did you listen to all of "Catfish"?

I really like it; it's got "rockers" like "Doctor To My Disease" and "This Is Not Love", it's got the aforementioned Celtic-y tracks and it's got the bluesier songs like "Still Loving You Tonight" and "Sleeping With The Dog".

Other highlights for me are "Roll Yer Own", "Rock On The Road", "Sparrow On the Schoolhouse Wall"...hell, almost the whole thing.  The only songs I think are "meh" are "White Innocence" and "Like A Tall Thin Girl"

Basically I think this album pulls together several eras of Tull.

Thoughts?

For the Rockers, I like Occasional Demons and Doctor to My Disease
I think the best that Celtic songs is Thinking Round Corners
I really like the bluesy feel the Still Loving You Tonight

The whole album sounds good, but those are the ones that caught my ear the most.

I think Catfish is a good one; I don't know why many Tull fans dismiss it.  A lot of people like the next one "Roots To Branches" but I couldn't find a single track off that one to include in my comp.

Incidentally, "Stormwatch" is another good one.  I think it marks the end of the medieval/Celtic phase that started with Songs from the Wood.  It's got some tracks like that (Dun Ringill for one) but most of it sounds like this one that came up over the weekend while I was running around.  I think of this song every time I'm watching the local weather forecast and the weatherman says something about a stormfront moving in.

That sounds like pretty classic Tull to me. It could have been off any of their 70s albums.

By the way, I've really enjoyed listening to some Jethro Tull the last couple weeks. It's something I haven't listened to for quite a while. Thanks for bringing them up.

Yeah, I really like Tull.  The music is so all over the place that it doesn't get boring.  And this is one band where I usually pay attention to lyrics.  I even turned in some Tull lyrics from the Heavy Horses album for a poetry class in college.  I hated the class and was terrible at it but it was required for my English major so I used parts of Moths and Heavy Horses and got an "A" on both.  Laughing

I know good poetry when I see it, I just can't create it.

I'm probably worse than you; I can't even understand most poetry.

Starting on my Hooters comp.  Ripping Nervous Night first.  This is the one with "all the hits" everyone knows.

I grew up hearing this band before anyone else ever did because they're from Philadelphia, PA.  I lived about 50 miles from there and the AOR FM station back in the day was in Philly.  They played 'All You Zombies" long before the band even had a record deal.

I actually saw the Hooters on the beach in New Haven, CT back in 1994, long after they heyday.  But they were still great.   And it was a free show.

Now I'm ripping my favorite Hooters album "One Way Home".  This is the one with "Satellite", "Karla With A K", "Fightin' On The Same Side" and Engine 999 on it.

If you want to hear "the hits" plus a few other lesser known Hooters songs, check out the "Hooterization" retrospective.  It has all the songs from the 80s plus some oddball covers.

Hooterization

I'm heading back through some other 70s and 80s bands.

I like .38 Special but a lot of their songs sound pretty much the same.  This is my favorite by them:
