I forgot to mention that we put two more people on the DL. I'm sure they put J.P. Howell on for "left arm uselessness". The tough one is Devon Travis going back on the DL with a bone bruise. That's going to be more than the 10 days. That guy has no luck at all.

The Jays lost a lot of close games early on. A few they deserved to lose, others were just some bad luck. The Jays had a really good stretch, but have been only about .500 the last 10 games.

I don't know what it is about West Coast trips, but the Jays never seem to do well. Two games in a row, they've managed not to score much off of the lowly A's. Here's hoping they can at least win the final game of the series today, then headed to Seattle and beat up on them. The thing about Seattle is that there are more Jays fans that go to those games then there are Mariners fans.

The Cards always suck on West Coast trips too. Always have.

Some scrub came back off the DL last night to pitch for Oakland. The Jays made him look like he got reincarnated into Cy Young.

Did you see what the Cardinals did last night?

They made history...and not in a good way.

Scooter Gennett became the 17th person in MLB history to hit four homeruns in one game.   Scooter Gennett?????  Seriously????   We gave up 4 homers to someone named "Scooter"?????  And he had a whopping total of 3 in 110 at bats coming in. The guy had 38 career homers coming into last night.  38!!!!!  First guy to do it in Reds history which is pretty amazing considering all the sluggers they've had.  And the total footage of the homers was over 1500 feet so they weren't "wall-scraping" cheapies either.

Good Lord we suck...

Holy crap!  Tonight we're going with a mostly Triple A squad.  I guess these guys can't do any worse than the "regulars" have been doing so why not?  No Fowler, no Molina, no Diaz

The Cardinals announcers are talking about rare hitting feats in baseball history because of "Scooter's" performance last night.

I find it really hard to believe that there have been more perfect games pitched (25) than four homerun games (17).

And of course they eventually came around to Fernando Tatis of the Cardinals.  In 1999 he hit two grand slams in one inning OFF THE SAME PITCHER!!!!  (Chan Ho Park).  I remember watching that game and being stunned.  Not only does he STILL hold the major league record as the only player to ever hit 2 grand slams in one inning, he also holds the record for most RBI in one inning ( 8 ).  But you know what makes it most unbelievable to me?  He did all that against the same pitcher!  That WILL NEVER HAPPEN AGAIN.  Mark it down.  Guaranteed.  In today's MLB game there is no way a pitcher would be allowed to remain in an inning for all that hitting.

Tonight's Cardinal game is a classic example of why I hate the DH.

Cards were up 3-1 in their half of the 6th.  With two out they put two guys on but the pitcher's spot was due up next.  Lance Lynn had only thrown 74 pitches in 5 innings but he sucks as a hitter so what do you do?

Matheny chose to pinch-hit Fowler who came through with a single to put St. Louis up 4-1.

*** End of DH argument ****

****Begin Cecil Sucks****

So Matheny brings in Matt Bowman who pitched a scoreless 6th for St. Louis.  So it's still 4-1 in the bottom of the 7th.  Who does Matheny bring in?

Four hits later it's now 4-4.  CECIL SUCKS!!!

AGAIN!!!!!

Boy when it's going bad, it really goes bad.

Sea Serpent served up the tie and Rosenthal came in and promptly threw a gopher ball to now trail 6-4.

AGAIN!!!!  I put this on Matheny.  I was mad when he yanked Lynn for a pinch hitter in the 6th because that meant we'd be relying on this GODAWFUL bullpen for 4 friggin' innings.  Seriously?   This pen is lucky to throw ONE scoreless innings and Matheny wants to rely on them for FOUR???

Dumbass...

I would definitely hang my head in shame after that. Darn Scooter… Those are things that make you go "WTH?!"

Wow, no kidding! There is no way a picture would be allowed to do that now.

Speaking of rare feats, I was listening to the Toronto/Oakland game the other day and Oakland's Rajai Davis was at bat. They mentioned that he is the only person in major league history to have a walkoff single, double, triple, and a home run. Think about it, how rare would a walkoff triple be?

The Jays managed to pull it out against Oakland, despite some plays not made that cost them some runs early on. Like you talked about the other day, somebody playing out of position didn't play some balls correctly and some runs scored. Anyway, all the Jays' runs came on home runs, which is pretty common for them. Justin Smoak hit his 16th and 17th of the year and now is 2nd in the majors.

Smoak has been a revelation this year, and the contract extension ($4.3M per year for 2 years) they gave him last year now looks shrewd. He’d played 824 major league games by the end of last season, and done nothing to distinguish himself as a viable everyday first baseman. He hit .217/.314/.391 line with 14 home runs and 36 RBIs, and struck out every three times in 126 games. In 59 games this year, he's hitting .291/.353/.597 with 17 home runs and 42 RBIs. He's striking out only once every 5 plate appearances or so and is walking at a much greater pace. This is a guy who's been a fringe player for several years and is now 30.

I'm sure they do regularly. I don't think that's the issue. He's always been a big guy with a huge power potential. I just think that he's revamped his approach at the plate and trying to rely more on contact and then trying to hit for power. He's big enough that he supplies enough power when just trying to make good contact.

I don't think the Cardinals are ever going to win another game. It's 5-0 Reds in the bottom of the 6th

Came across this interaction between Wendy's and Oakland A's accounts on Twitter.

Well the Cards got rid of that stupid third base coach who got 3 guys thrown out at home in less than a week.  They also released Jhonny Peralta which was no shock since he's in the final year of his contract and Gyorko has cemented third base.  It also didn't help that Peralta had no extra base hits this year and zero RBI.   Cards had a press conference today.  GM John Mozeliak said "No one should feel safe including myself"

And the losing streak is over.  Wacha went 6 innings and gave up two runs as STL won 3-2 over the Phillies.

Today Carlos Martinez threw the first complete game shutout of his career. It only took 107 pitches and that's with 11 strikeouts. Only 4 hits allowed.

How is it even possible to be this far into the season and have no extra-base hits and no RBIs? That's astounding. It's good to see them taking care of the problems and not just holding on to some guide because, "Well, we have to pay him this year anyway". I hate that excuse. Put the best team on the field.

The Jays managed to take 2 of 3 from the Mariners on the weekend. Any time the Jays visit Seattle, it's more like a home game. On the broadcast, you can see a sea of blue and here the chance "Let's go Blue Jays". It must really piss off the Seattle fans.

All three games featured good starts (Biagini, Stroman, and J.A. Happ). All games were close, 2-4, 4-2, and 4-0. As per usual, the Jays scored most of their runs off home runs. In the 4-2 game on Saturday, they only had 4 hits. Fortunately, 3 of them were home runs.

Here's a heads-up play from the Saturday game. There's an extended video of it on the Sportsnet site, but you never seem to be able to see the videos on there. The extended videos shows the complete reaction from the coach, which is pretty hilarious.
