Another nice outing by Carlos Martinez and this time he was rewarded with a win.  8IP, 4H, 1ER, 9K, 3BB.  Fowler homered in the 8th to break the 1-1 tie and Oh picked up the save.

Man, Martinez' ERA is now 3.08 but without those stupid dreadlock hair-weaves he was wearing for about 4 starts his ERA is more like upper 1s.   He was stellar before the weaves and stellar after; Samson in reverse.

The Cardinals are obviously serious. They've taken the first two months to evaluate. Who are they replacing them with?

Holy crap.  I'm watching the Astros @ Twins and they're talking about Monday's game between these two teams.  Houston trailed 8-2 in the 8th and ended up winning 16-8.  First time a team has ever trailed by 6 in the 8th then won by 8.

That's because they scored 11 runs in one inning!

Unless there was something interfering with his mechanics, that has got to be a coincidence.

The Jays finished up with a 6-4 win against the Reds to sweep the 3-game series. Pitching was reasonable in this series, but the offense was a wrecking crew. They hit 9 home runs and outscored Cincinnati 28-10. That concludes a month that was completely opposite of April, going 18-10. Today are now a game below .500, 5 1/2 games behind the Yankees, you come to town for a series starting today.

A big part of that change has been Bautista and Travis. Bautista was hitting .180 with 1 home run at the end of April. He's now hitting .251 with 10 home runs and an OPS of .817. Travis was even worse at the end of April, hitting .136 with 2 home runs and 2 doubles. He's now hitting .261 and leads the majors in doubles with 18.

They brought up John Gant. He was part of the Heywood deal with Atlanta.

How strange is this?

The Cards are wrapping up their 4 game series with LA this afternoon. The Dodgers are on a 7 game road trip and all 7 games have different start times. What are the odds of that?

Cards won 2-0 today behind Wainwright - on both sides of the ball.  He threw 6 shutout innings and drove in both runs with a 2-run homer.  He's now allowed just 1 ER in his last 26 innings and lowered his ERA over 3 full runs to 3.79.
Right now the only member of the starting rotation who isn't pitching well is Wacha.

Just checked scores and it looks like Marco Estrada was lit up by the Yankees. At least Judge didn't homer.  I guess all the puns on his last name are cute and it's sort of cool that the "stodgy" Yankees actually have the "Judge's Chambers" out in rightfield but I'm already sick of hearing about this guy.

BTW, I had to check the Cardinals schedule after you posted that because it posted as "you come to town today" after you referenced the Yankees so I figured it should have been "who come to town...".  I was pretty sure we're done with Toronto for the year.

I was listening to the radio for that home run call!

I never noticed that. It's one of those speech recognition glitches again.

But yes, Estrada didn't get lit up. It's really odd, because he has owned the Yankees the last three years. I'm sure he'll be back on track next start.

Maybe.  He sure hasn't gotten out of the gate strong this year.

It's now 2-2 in the 8th.  Cards have the bases loaded and 2 out so guess who the Cubs are bringing in?

"Mr. Crooked Hat".  Crap.  Molina whiffed on a 2-2 ball in the dirt.

Cards lost 3-2 when Magneuris Sierra, who was brought back up from AA to fill in for a few days while Gyorko is on paternity leave, misplayed a ball in left that went for a double in the 8th.  One groundout and a flyball later and the Cubs grabbed the lead 3-2 and hung onto it.

Doesn't it always seem to happen that way?  Your team has one new guy and/or a guy playing out of position and the ball always finds him in a critical situation.  Not only is Sierra a 21 year old kid but he's been playing center in the minors but with Fowler there, Matheny stuck him in left.  So of course the ball finds him in a 2-2 tie in the 8th and he messes it up.

Wow.  The Brewers struck out 26 times in a 12 inning game last night against LA.  That ties a MLB record.

Yeah, that does seem to happen. I wonder if players intentionally headed the people out of position. It wouldn't surprise me.

The Jays split the series with the Yankees. There was a little bit of everything in the series: good offense, good pitching, bad offense, bad pitching. I was figuring we would get a split, but hoping to take 3 games out of the 4.

Devon Travis got hit on the left hand/wrist yesterday by and 96 mile an hour fastball. X-rays came back negative, fortunately, but I'm hoping he is not out long. Power backup infielder is great defensively, but is an offensive void.

Cards were swept by the Cubs in 3 backbreakers.  STL led or was tied late in all three.  Those were killer games.  We have ZERO offense most of the time and when we DO finally get some offense the bullpen sucks.

Yep.  I'd rather lose 10-0.  These 3 games were killers.

But make no mistake, the Cardinals deserved to lose all three.  When the starters weren't sucking, the relievers were.  When the relievers were good, the defense was atrocious.  And when all those were good then the baserunning sucked.  Even the third base coach deserves some blame for the game 1 loss.

At least they sucked "as a team". It's sort of frustrating because I can't really get mad at one guy or one facet of the team. It was a general suck.

Here's one you could win a lot of bar bets with:

Who leads the Cardinals in stolen bases this year?

Answer: Yadier Molina He just stole his 5th base tonight which actually ties him with Randal Grichuk but Grichuk is in A Ball so that makes Molina the team leader.

And another tough loss.

Martinez entered the 7th inning having allowed just 1 hit and retiring 14 in a row.  He left with 1 out and two on and Siegrist allowed both guys to score and the Cards lost 4-2.

Two more runners lost on the basepaths too and at least one of them was totally the fault of the third base coach again.  That guy needs to go. They need to cut Siegrist loose too; he sucked last year and he's sucked this year. He's next on the Toho Bullpen Hit List.

Wow. That says more about the rest of the team then it does Molina's "speed".

The Jays' third base coach is a little bit aggressive too, but not egregiously so.

Amazingly, given how poor their start was, the Jays now have a better record than the Cardinals. We've been abysmal lately. And not blowout losses but blowing game late. They've lost 4 in a row and led into the 7th inning or later in all 4. That hurts!

Well at least some of the trends ended tonight.

So much for Wainwright and his diminishing ERA.  He gave up 8 runs in 3 2/3 innings.

And so much for leading the game until late and then blowing it.  The Reds are up 10-0 after 4.  I've switched over to Smackdown.

The Jays lost a lot of close games early on. A few they deserved to lose, others were just some bad luck. The Jays had a really good stretch, but have been only about .500 the last 10 games.

I don't know what it is about West Coast trips, but the Jays never seem to do well. Two games in a row, they've managed not to score much off of the lowly A's. Here's hoping they can at least win the final game of the series today, then headed to Seattle and beat up on them. The thing about Seattle is that there are more Jays fans that go to those games then there are Mariners fans.
