They sure have been clobbered by injuries.

Cards lost that game last night and for once they deserved to lose.† Wacha sucked.† Glad I didn't stay up to watch.† Tonight we're in Colorado and for some reason this game starts at 7:40 my time which is weird because I think that's 6:40 Colorado time.† But at least I'll be able to watch this game.

Nope.† But I got to see last night's debacle.† Martinez was decent; 3 runs in†7 1/3 innings but oh, that bullpen again. 7 ER in 2/3 of an inning between 2 guys.† Sheesh.† At least it wouldn't have really mattered because St. Louis only had 5 hits for the game and would have lost 3-0 anyway.† But good grief.† 10-0 with 7 runs in 2/3 of an inning off the pen???

The Jays and Rangers are playing this afternoon. Estrada gave up a home run on the first pitch of the game and are down 1-0 after 2.

Finally in the bottom of the 5th, we break through. We had 4 or 5 balls hit hard to the warning track in this game, but came up with nothing. This time with two runners on, Bautista ripped one over the wall to give the Jays a 3-1 lead.

I see 3-1 was the final.

Cards are facing a rookie lefty in Colorado tonight so this game is over.

The Cardinal announcers just dropped this nugget:

Coming into tonight the Cardinal starters have gone at least 6 innings in 32 of the 44 starts.† And yet the team has been hovering around .500 all year.† What does that tell you?† The bullpen SUCKS!!!!

Wainwright threw 7 shutout innings last†night.† He won his 4th start in a row.

Yeah it worked the way it's supposed to.† Wainwright threw his low 90s fastball and wicked curve for 7 innings, Rosenthal came in throwing 100mph heat again in the 8th and struck out the side then Oh came in and closed it out.†The impressive thing is that Wainwright's recent starts have been against real good teams, not bottom feeders.† The Cubs, the Brewers, the Dodgers and the Rockies (who actually have the best record in the NL).

Before the game they did designate Miguel Socolovich for assignment.† His final appearance was 4 of the 7 runs Friday night.† His ERA was over 8.00.† They brought up some kid who's been closing games for Memphis with an ERA in the 1's.† He can't be any worse.† I wish they would do that with Fatboy but it won't happen because they inexplicably gave him a new contract before the season started.

That's the way I figure with some of the Jays callups, although it's getting better now. Do you ever wonder if they just pick a random name sometimes? A couple guys the Jays called up had brutal AAA numbers.

The Jays took 2 of 3 from the Rangers. It's always fun beating the Rangers. One of the highlights was this one, courtesy of our old pal Odor. He gets booed mercilessly, so it was especially enjoyable for the fans.

The Cards hit 4 solo HRs yesterday but once again the bullpen threw gasoline on the fire and STL lost 8-4.†

The real bright spot was Paul DeJong.† This guy wasn't even in the stadium when the game began.† Kolton Wong was put on the DL overnight so the Cards called this infielder up from Memphis.† But his flight was delayed so he didn't even get to the game until around the 4th inning.† He was put in to pinch hit in the 9th and on his very first swing in the majors he blasted one over the left centerfield wall.† How cool is that?

Wow, the Cardinals GM isn't fooling around.† He's sent Randal Grichuk down to A ball in Jupiter, FL.† Grichuk is one of those guys who's always been tagged as a "five tool player" but he just strikes out WAAAAY too much in the majors.† He's starting to look like the dreaded "4A player" - too good for AAA but not good enough for the majors.

Geez the Cardinals' offense has evaporated.† They lost 5-1 today.† Leake went 7 and gave up 4 runs but he pitched better than that; there were several misplays behind him (like overthrowing cutoff men) that cost a couple of runs.† But we would have lost anyway because we only managed 1 run on 5 hits and that one run scored without a hit.

BTW, yesterday in Colorado utility infielder Greg Garcia hit his first homer of the year; a 462 ft bomb that ties Giancarlo Stanton for the 10 longest homer this year.†

That's hilarious.† Garcia's a pretty good hitter but he's a slap-hitter kind of guy; it's funny that he's tied with a monster homerun hitter like Stanton.

And the new guy DeJong had two more hits today, a double and a single.† If he keeps hitting like this Wong can just stay on the DL for all I care.

I wonder how many times that has happened where a player has hit a home run on his very first swing. Was it the first pitch as well?

Obviously they sent him down that far so that he would have time to work on something specific. If it wasn't something specific they wanted him to rework, they would've simply sent him to AAA.

462 feet in Colorado is like 390 feet everywhere else!

The Jays didn't have that problem yesterday. They scored 17 runs on 23 hits. It was one of those games where everything found a hole. Mind you, it wasn't small ball; they also had a grand slam, 3-run home run, and a 2-run home run. It's great having the lineup mostly healthy again. Speaking of healthy, J.A. Happ comes back to start today.

Man, it's too bad about Mike Trout. He's this generation's Joe DiMaggio. He was hitting 337 with 16 HR and 36 RBI, had a shot at the triple crown. Now he's out 6-8 weeks with a torn ligament in his thumb from sliding into second.

I read that this morning and was going to post it! This year has been just brutal for injuries, especially to higher profile players.

This whole "keep your young pitchers fresh" philosophy sure is a double-edged sword.† Michael Wacha was rolling along with the 5th best ERA in the NL until the last Cardinal homestand when, because of a few off days mixed in, Mike Matheny decided to skip Wacha "to keep him fresh".†

Well he's now had two starts since that 11 day "rest" and he's sucked in both of them.† Tonight he only went 3 innings and gave up 4 runs.† I get the concept but when a guy is going great the motto should be "if it ain't broke, DON'T FIX IT!!!"† Dammit.

Watching MLB Central and they just teased another version of the bit where they take 4 similar names then give a stat about one of them and you have to pick which name it is. †

Today it's Trevor Bauer, Joe Mauer, Matt Lauer

So the schtick goes "This person's parents emigrated from Germany in 1943.† Bauer, Mauer or Lauer?"

This one was weak; there are usually 4 names.

Holy crap. I'm watching the Astros @ Twins and they're talking about Monday's game between these two teams. Houston trailed 8-2 in the 8th and ended up winning 16-8. First time a team has ever trailed by 6 in the 8th then won by 8.

And this comment from the Cardinals web site:

Quote :
This and the Socolovich demotion, leaves only one reliever whose entrance makes me ask "why are we giving up on winning this game?" But I doubt Cecil is going anywhere anytime soon (unless itís to high A to pitch bp to Grichuk).
