That used to happen all the time when the Cardinals had Pujols at first.  Those two had some kind of "chemistry" where Pujols knew when Molina would be throwing.  Molina led the league in pickoffs at first for several years in a row. And a lot of them looked like that.  They weren't all some guy who broke for second too soon.  I don't know how many times Molina picked off a guy who was adjusting his cup while off first base or something similarly stupid.

As I'm sure you've heard or read, Stroman completely dominated the Puerto Ricans. He allowed only a leadoff double in the 7th. Only three balls were hit out of the infield. He was named MVP of the WBC. I sure hope he can pitch like that during the season.

Yesterday morning, before the game, Gibbons had this to say about him: “He’s got the weight of the world on his shoulders. I hope he doesn’t come back any shorter.”

Speaking of Gibbons, the Jays extended his contract through 2019. I really like that.

Funny you should mention that.  I just switched over MLB Network and they're replaying the game.   I just saw the one hit.

Apparently Yadier Molina had a good WBC.  Once the championship game was out of hand the announcers were talking about who should be the MVP and both of them agreed that had Puerto Rico won it would have been Molina.

I'm glad it's over. Less than two weeks until the season starts.

Great. Lance Lynn who'd been cruising through Spring Training left today after 1 inning for "precautionary reasons". I hate when the Cardinals PR department does that. They'll say that for anything from a totally blown out elbow to a hangnail.

The update on the Cardinal web site says it was "upper back soreness".

Lynn also said if this was the regular season we wouldn't even be talking about it. So hopefully that's the truth and not another Cardinal "snow job". They do that constantly; make major injuries seem like nothing at first.

Usually you get the ever vague "upper body injury".

The Blue Jays have set up their starting rotation in this order: Marco Estrada, J.A. Happ, Marcus Stroman, Francisco Liriano, and Aaron Sanchez.

I'm not sure how they decided the order they did. It doesn't really matter; any of them could be the #1 starter. In fact, all of them would be on many teams.

The Cardinals rotation is set up as Carlos Martinez, Adam Wainwright, Mike Leake, Lance Lynn and Michael Wacha. Matheny decided to give Martinez the season opening start against the Cubs Sunday night. It's on ESPN. I can't remember the Cards opening game ever being a night game before.

When was the last time Wainwright didn't start opening day, aside from an injury?

I found this interview pretty interesting on how Kevin Pillar positions himself and does his footwork. It's kind of like the Donaldson comments about hitting, where he debunks a common instruction given from many coaches.

He's been the opening day start the last 4 years.

That was interesting. And he's wearing Jason Motte's Strikeout Cancer T-shirt.

It's pretty cool. Motte started that several years ago when he was the Cardinal closer. He asked a few friends on some other teams if they'd be interested in participating and the campaign just took off. There are representative on all major league teams now.

Speaking of shirts, that reminds me that I was going to post this a couple weeks ago. It's what the team Israel fans have.

They also have a mascot.

Motte's one of the good guys. I'll always pull for him wherever he plays.

The Jays don't play until this evening. Evening games are pretty rare in spring training.

The Jays wrapped up their Grapefruit League schedule today. They have "exhibition games" in Montréal versus the Pirates on Friday and Saturday. They've done that the last several years. I don't really care for it; the field looks like it's more or less painted cement. Can't wait for the season to start on Monday. Get on with it already!

The Cards won their final Grapefruit league game today 6-2.  They finished Spring Training 7-0-1 against Washington and won 20 games total for the first time since 1997.

Not that any of that really means anything.  We have an exhibition game against AA Springfield and then AAA Memphis before finally opening the season Sunday night on ESPN against the Cubs.

And Matheny announced that Jhonny Peralta will start at third and Kolten Wong will start at second which means Jedd Jyorko and his 30 homers from last year will be riding the pine.  But if Wong doesn't start hitting the first month I fully expect Jyorko to take his spot at second.

Why would they have Jyorko be on the bench?

Now if you had a DH...

I really don't think Wong will last the season as a Cardinal.  He had a terrible spring and he's turning into a headcase where he takes his woes at the plate into the field with him.  He's turning into the second coming of Cletus.

He does.  But management stupidly gave him a 5 year 25.5 mil contract before last year.  How does he thank the team?

Quote :
Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak expressed disappointment over second baseman Kolten Wong saying earlier this week that he would rather be traded than be part of a platoon.
"Overall, we've had a very positive camp, and I certainly don't want someone's comments to bring us down," Mozeliak told ESPN on Wednesday.
The team is considering such an arrangement at second base, as Wong is batting just .184 with a .558 OPS entering Wednesday's Grapefruit League finale.
The team talked up his ability to improve its defense all winter and seemed intent on using Wong as the everyday second baseman, but his struggles this spring and concerns about what to do with Jedd Gyorko -- who led the team in home runs last year -- gave rise to the possible platoon. Wong bats left-handed; Gyorko is right-handed.
The Cardinals and Wong, 26, agreed to a five-year, $25.5 million contract extension last spring. He told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch this week that he would prefer to play elsewhere than split time.
"I just feel like, you know, my time here, it's almost limited," Wong told the paper. "So, we will see what happens. I don't know what's going on. No one has told me anything. I'm just working hard, doing what I've got to do to get myself ready for whatever happens."
