I just took this through my kitchen window a few minutes ago.  Eastern Bluebird.  It's been a long time since I've been able to add a new feeder visitor to my list. It's ironic that I've never seen one on my deck before today because the Eastern Bluebird is the Missouri State Bird.

Nice. There is a type of woodpecker that's fairly rare in our region, but occasionally one shows up at my feeder. Every time I go get my camera, it flies away.

I get LOTS of woodpeckers (no rare ones though) because there's a treeline about 50 yards from my deck. I get downy, hairy, red bellied and flicker woodpeckers all the time.

This is the kind that sometimes stops by. It is a very large woodpecker.

Cool! I knew the pileated was rare. Very distinctive appearance. Most of the woodpeckers seem to have distinguishing marks. The only ones that are really similar are the downy and the hairy woodpeckers. They're marked exactly the same but the hairy woodpecker is about double the size of the downy and has a longer bill so even then it's real easy to tell them apart.

I'm determined to get a picture of it at my feeder one day!

That's fascinating.  I might try that since I feel pretty much the same way about humans.  Laughing

In all seriousness, I have worked the overnight shift at two separate points in my life and it really is totally different compared to the "9 to 5" shift so I imagine animals have probably figured that out.
