Four more homers last night and Leake finally had a good outing. Cards beat the Angels 8-1.

MLB Network took home a bunch of sports Emmys last night. MLB Tonight was best daily studio sports show, Billy Ripken won for best in-studio analyst, Ken Rosenthal won for best reporter and Bob Costas won for best studio host.

Stuff like that and the Bryce Harper record yesterday are why I love baseball.  Just when you think you've seen everything there is to see in baseball....I think baseball has more "first time" records than any other sport; there are just so many more variables at play in the game.

I couldn't agree more. There's just so much to baseball: bizarre stats, amazing or bizarre plays, always a chance to see something that hasn't happened before.

Like this.  This is from 1986 and it's never happened before or since at any Busch Stadium. To this day it's his MLB claim to fame.  From Wikipedia:

Quote :
Michael Russell Laga (born June 14, 1960 in Ramsey, New Jersey) is a former professional baseball player for the Detroit Tigers, St. Louis Cardinals and San Francisco Giants in the 1980s and 1990s. He is best known for once hitting a foul ball out of the second Busch Stadium (September 15, 1986).

And here it is:

He actually still shows up at Cardinal functions to sign autographs and stuff just because of that one swing.

I can see why nobody else hit it out of there.

Ken Rosenthal is a great reporter. I'm just glad Harold Baines didn't win anything.

I'm not sure what is with the Cardinal bats. I don't think anybody would've predicted they would be near the top for home runs and runs scored.

I've been trying that Beat the Streak contest. It came up on a suggested when I was downloading something else for my phone, so I figured I'd give it a try. I had Mike Trout to get a hit last night, and he did.

J.A. Happ pitched another great outing, going 8 2/3 scoreless innings. He is now 5-0 with a 2.05 ERA. He's gone 17 starts in a row giving up 3 runs or less.

I know he's been saying that Tulo's defense alone has saved the Jays a ton of runs.

I'm watching Cleveland vs Houston on MLB Network. They're using the Astros feed and the announcers were just doing a promo for Cletus' bobblehead night.

A Cletus bobble head. Who would've thought that a few years ago?

Russell Martin left the bases loaded in the 1st inning for the 2nd time in 3 days. He sure is having trouble getting it going this year.

Ouch!. Todd Frazier of the Chisox dove into the stands and smashed his face on a seat. Five stitches in his lower lip.

That's gotta hurt!

Stroman just had his first major-league at-bat. He actually looked pretty good swinging. He ended up flying out to deep center field.

The Jays have bobbled the ball 3 times and we're only in the 2nd inning.

Sounds like the Cardinals. We are so far ahead of everyone else in errors committed it's ridiculous.

That was fast. Yahoo already has a story and the video of Frazier getting hurt.

The Jays are one of the best defensive teams in the majors, so it's out of character.

The Jays are down 4-1 after 5 innings. Stroman hasn't pitched nearly as badly as his line suggests. The Jays only have 1 error, but there are at least 4 other plays they should have made that didn't get counted as errors.

That's true for a lot of the Cardinal starters too (except Leake, his season stats reflect just how bad he's been).  Aledmys Diaz especially has been really suspect at short but we just can't afford to take the kid out of the lineup because of his bat.  Ruben Tejada has been back for almost 2 weeks now and he's riding the pine because Diaz is just blasting the ball.

Here's an off-the-wall question based on a Yahoo article I just read:

Was Bartolo Colon once suspended for PEDs? If so, I don't remember it.

Sometimes you just get unlucky, and I think that is more what today is. It's not that they were sloppy, just things that were getting through that normally don't.

I don't remember anything about it either.

Once again, the biggest problem today is the lack of offense. I think the Jays lead the majors in pitches seen during the first inning. And again today, they loaded the bases with two hits and a walk. Since that inning, they've had one hit. It's almost like they become borderline inept once the second inning starts.

St Louis does that a lot too, especially against good pitchers. But at least we usually plate a few before the bats go dormant. And it's been like that for years. They'll get someone like Kershaw for 2 runs in the first and have the bases loaded with two out and the potential to really bust it open but it doesn't happen. Then everyone takes the rest of the night off.

Here's the article about Bartolo Colon I was referring to. I looked it up and apparently he was suspended while he was with the A's.
