It has been a long time, I have been keeping "life" to myself. Totally avoiding social situations, for personal reasons. Last two days, I changed it all. No, not much socializing, but my cousin and I went on a short trip. One within my city itself, and the other to a nearby waterfall.

Sharing a few pics.

A ship, preparing to leave Kochi harbour. Marine Drive (I live hardly a km from here) in the backdrop.

:)

Basically India is a very vast country, we have plenty of differnet nature here (just like religions, and languages, and fetivals).

Where I live, my home state, is all greenery, with mountains, ocean, and numerous rivers and backwaters and lakes.

I think that is how a lot of North Americans view that area and the Middle East.

But middle east IS a desert, but not whole of India, despite the north-western terrain is a desert. That is hardly a small part of a huge country that India is.

I think a lot of people are also swayed by the visuals of pollution and poverty in Calcutta.

Yeah, Kolkatta is a nasty city, famous since British days, and for mother Theresa. But that city is not what India is.

Is it true that Northern India is considered more "uncivilized" than the rest of the country? Some of the Indians I've worked with seem to regard the northern part the way a lot of Americans regard the southern part of America. "Rednecks" and backwards.

For instance, Bizarre News one time had this story about some rock throwing festival in India where two groups of people literally hurl rocks at each other and people get hurt. When I asked someone to confirm whether the story was true or not she said something like "Yeah, but that's North India; that doesn't count."

I know, that's why I wanted to verify it.  But apparently it's true.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/asia/india/6069789/Indian-villagers-riot-over-ban-on-stone-throwing-festival.html

What struck me is that the person I asked about it shrugged it off just like we do here in the States when someone posts some picture of someone from a state like Arkansas doing something stupid (I saw a pic one time of a guy in a pool with a TV floating on a raft and the thing was PLUGGED IN!!!).  We say stuff like "Yeah, that's the South for ya."

BTW, I'm sorry if the question seems offensive Shredder; I certainly don't mean it to be.

I'm just fascinated to find out that other countries have the same attitudes we have here in the United States.

When I went to Sweden on business back in the late 80s, one of the first things I saw while we were waiting for a train in Stockholm was some guy taking a piss in the corner of the train station while his wife yelled at him. Our "guide" from the local Sweden plant said something like "Must be a Norwegian. Or from north Sweden".

I find it fascinating that other nations have these attitude toward people of their own countries. I grew up thinking most people from southern states in the US were idiots.

Do you have anything like this in Canada OBF? People you tend to regard with disdain because of where they're from?

Toho I was sleeping, no not at all offensive.

India as such a melting pot of innumerable cultures, and practices. Many, are superstitious - though the essence had some spiritual aspects to it, not many understands it and takes things to filthy extreme. (this is true not only within Hinduism but also almost all other religions, bothm modern and ancient).

It is, ironically, true that we Southies consider North Indians to be more primitive and arrogant, whereas they view us as "weird" mainly becamse of the darker skin we have down South. But incidentally, the Southies are the "real" Indians (haha), whereas the North has been mixed with invading Caucasians, Persians, and Arabs (happened thousands of years ago all right). I will not really categorize India to just North and South, but these are the broader divisions. But North Indians are nore fanatic, and more arrogant in many levels, and they have a feeling they are upper hand. North also has states with extreme population, and the common people do indeed live in pathetic conditions (we say the state of Bihar is just "hell" where development havent dared to peek in. But have major representation int he Indian Government)

South whereas, was more intellectual oriented (even from ancient times). But that said, even down South ther eare weird practices, so we cannot just differentiate north and south based on this alone.

All the IT and Space boom started with the South, which the North is yet not able to match with. South is more education focussed whereas North is more bureaucracy focussed. (West is business focussed, East well..... they are are a pack of all sort of yet reached no where. North East part, the rest of India consider them to be "Chinese" more than "Indians" - though thigns have changed last few years).

To make matters worse, every Indian state is different from each other, every district (province / counties) in each state is different from each other, and kill me, even different parts of every district can be massively different. Practices differs, dialect differs, mindset differs................

I just find it fascinating that almost every nation of a significant size has this disparate view of its people based on where they live.  This is the kind of stuff that almost turned me into an anthropology major in college.  No money in that though...

Thanks for the description.  That almost exactly duplicates the US except here it's the North that thinks the South is primitive and uneducated.

Apparently Sweden is more like India in that the "civilized and intelligent" people live in the south and the rest live in the north. Here the perception is the opposite.

Neither is true of course but rather an overgeneralization based on....what? That's the part that confounds me, both here and abroad.

I totally agree. I think these are the kinds of discussions most people don't have because they don't want to risk offending someone. But since we're friends I figured you'd take the question in the spirit it was intended.

I think questions like this not only help us learn about each other but also help us learn about ourselves. For instance, I'd love to know how the stereotype developed here in the US. I suspect it probably derives from the Civil War but I don't know that for sure. And it's really interesting that you can find analogous situations all over the globe.
